Adam McCalvy, of MLB.com, reports the Milwaukee Brewers placed RP Trevor Hoffman (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list Monday, March 30, with a strained oblique. He will miss at least the first four games of the season. RP Carlos Villanueva is expected to serve as the team's closer with Hoffman sidelined.
Villanueva has struggled this spring, but he proved himself in a relief role last season. He has more value than Seth McClung, a journeyman who has served as a starter/reliever in the past few seasons and was previously named as a possibility to close. Villanueva becomes a good late selection or pickup in deep mixed leagues or NL-only setups.
Hoffman's stock should plummet in drafts. The 41-year-old was already a questionable fantasy closer coming off one of his worst seasons of his career. Oblique injuries can linger, especially if he is rushed. It's best to avoid Hoffman in drafts unless he falls to the final few rounds. If you own him, don't release him to pick up Villanueva, but look to handcuff the two players.
