Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sign Brian Fuentes

MLB.com reports the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have agreed to terms with closer Brian Fuentes (Colorado Rockies) on a two-year deal, which also includes a club option for 2011. ESPNews reports the deal is for $17.5 million.

Last season, Fuentes saved 30 games in 34 chances while posting a 2.73 ERA for Colorado after reliever Manny Corpas proved to be undependable in the role. He hasn't pitched in the American League since his debut in 2001 with the Seattle Mariners.

The agreement now clarifies Fuentes' draft stock; he's joining a club that has generated at least 50 saves in four of the past five seasons. Fuentes could be a suitable No. 2 fantasy closer, but he comes with some risk based on the uncertainty of how he'll handle AL bats.

Angels setup man Jose Arredondo, 24, has been a popular sleeper at closer, but he loses that value in shallow mixed leagues without a clear path to opportunities. He could still be a deep sleeper in large mixed leagues because of his skills, and he retains sleeper status in AL-only formats. Fellow setup reliever Scot Shields remains a solid fantasy choice for similar reasons; he has considerably less risk associated with him but also much less upside.
