Josh Katzowitz, of MLB.com, reports the Houston Astros placed CL Jose Valverde (calf) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, April 28, with a strained right calf muscle. The move was retroactive to Monday, April 27, meaning Valverde will be eligible to return on May 12. LaTroy Hawkins will fill in as closer.
Valverde had been playing through the injury that he originally suffered Tuesday, April 21, while trying to make a throw to first base.
The hard-throwing stopper will be replaced in the closer role by Hawkins, who has already recorded two saves in Valverde's stead.
Stash Valverde in all leagues. Grab Hawkins immediately.
