Breaking News and Injury AnalysisCordero Placed on Bereavement List
By Bryce McRae Bill Ladson, of Washington.Nationals.MLB.com, reports the Washington Nationals placed closer Chad Cordero (personal) on the bereavement list Tuesday, May 8, as he returned to California to be with his grandmother, Josie Cordero, who is suffering from brain cancer. According to MLB rules, Cordero must miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games. Cordero had admitted earlier in the week that his thoughts were on his grandmother and that it was affecting him on the mound. This could be seen Sunday, May 6, as he blew his fourth save of the season, allowing one run on two hits and two walks. On the season, Cordero has four saves in eight opportunities, while posting a 4.70 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings. Replacing Cordero will be relief pitcher Jon Rauch. Rauch has yet to pick up a save this season; however, he is tied for second in the National League with eight holds. He also has one win, an ERA of 4.67 and a WHIP of 0.92. In his career, he has saved just two games while blowing three saves (all coming with the Nationals last season). As can be expected, Rauch should be picked up in your fantasy league. While he might not hold the job for long, depending on Cordero's return, he may still have the chance to pick up a few seven saves. There is also no guarantee Cordero will be in a good mental condition when he returns to the team. As he said earlier, his thoughts have not been on pitching lately, and it was clearly affecting him. Keep an eye on KFFL for any updates on Cordero's situation.
