Updating previous reports, Bruce Miles, of the Chicago Daily Herald, reports Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto (oblique) will be placed on the 15-day DL Friday, July 10, and could miss up to one month. "He's going to be out probably a month or so," said manager Lou Piniella. "I don't know the exact time frame. It could be a little less. What are you going to do? You can't do anything about it. You can't complain about it." Koyie Hill will take over as the No. 1 catcher.
Hill adds little to no offense for a team struggling to score runs; he still should be added in NL leagues merely for the playing time. Infielder Jake Fox could see action behind the plate, which would enhance the slugger's fantasy value for this season and next season if he can get regular playing time and enough games to qualify at catcher. The Cubbies, however, may call up a fantasy-irrelevant croucher to serve as a backup.
Soto has been a vast disappointment this season, but we don't advise dropping him unless absolutely necessary. The catcher position is far too scarce to give up on him. Place him on the disabled list and work the wire in his absence.
