KFFL answers some important fantasy baseball questions for each Major League Baseball team as spring training approaches. What must fantasy baseball players know about the Milwaukee Brewers? How safe is it to invest big money in Rickie Weeks? Have the words "safe" and "Rickie Weeks" ever been spotted together? Last season was his first with more than 475 at-bats. Without an improved BB/K, his clip won't swell. Even with climbing grounder rates, 20-plus homers is looking more certain for him than 20-plus steals - Milwaukee's red lights cause pileups - but the power would be a more comfortable projection if he generated more aerial hits.
If you take him, acknowledge the probability that he'll miss time. With second base options more abundant and with less costly risk than ever before, you must weigh what Weeks means to your team. As a mixed middle-rounder last year, he wound up being a steal. As a 2011 centerpiece? Many circles will overvalue him. How much does a handful of steals and runs scored distinguish him from Dan Uggla, a more stable and developed keystone power option that might cost less in drafts? Heck, even fellow DL buddy Ian Kinsler has a more well-rounded game - swipes and better BA - and can often be had for cheaper, with a bigger reward. Can we call Casey McGehee established? His loss of second base eligibility doesn't help his value. Homers aren't foreign to him, but you can't expect 23 again, especially with his high grounder rate. McGehee's BA isn't safe because of his shaky BB/K and justified BABIP normalization. RBI opportunities will still be there, though, and though his power doesn't play well at third, he can be a solid run producer who might come at a discount. Is John Axford fact or fluke? The Ax is sharp, but luckily, your draft mates might not think so. The righty's control is dull, but closers can get away with it sometimes, especially if they also own elite grounder inducement and dominance; Axford displayed both frequently before his breakthrough season. He could be a handy doubt-fueled value. Milwaukee doesn't have stable options besides him. Takashi Saito? Break glass only in case of injury. About Tim Heaney
