Ryan Hanigan, C, Cincinnati Reds

On Friday the Reds placed Ramon Hernandez (knee) on the DL and activated Ryan Hanigan (thumb) from it. The latter, barring complications, will start more often than backup Corky Miller while Hernandez is out.

Ready to end the carousel?

Hanigan has outstanding plate discipline and is hitting .333 with a couple of homers in 81 at-bats. If you're in need of a second backstop, you can do much worse than him.

Pitchers

Juan Gutierrez, RP, Arizona Diamondbacks

The D-backs have now moved into a full-on committee in the quest for saves in the desert. On Saturday Gutierrez came on in relief of the frequently ostracized Chad Qualls and nailed down a game in a tight one. Manager Kirk Gibson said that's what bullpen members are supposed to do.

Arizona listens rarely, it would appear. But, if you're in a spot where you need all the punctuation you can get, Guti is your best bet, at least until Friday - when the Snakes resume play.

Gutierrez endured a disastrous May but since has been pretty stable. If your mates are looking at the overall numbers, you might land him on the cheap. Then, cross your fingers.

Zach Duke, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Bucs' pitchers are rarely attractive, but at least another of them is now active. Duke (elbow) came off the DL today and will rejoin the rotation after the break.

In May and June, Duke reduced his BB/9 to rates comparable with those from his 2007 through 2009 seasons. He had also been experimenting with his repertoire, which, for a short while, led to an increase in ground-ball coaxing. There's room for improvement. How much? Well....
