Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat - AL

by Tim Heaney on August 3, 2010 @ 13:10:00 PDT

In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up?'s Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Mound meetings

  • Oakland Athletics RP Andrew Bailey
    Bailey: back by the weekend?
Andrew Bailey (rib) hasn't thrown for four days and will probably need at least two or three more days before he tosses again. Bailey probably won't be available for activation Friday - his first eligible day - but might rejoin the Oakland Athletics over the weekend.
The A's haven't had a save situation since Bailey was DLed. A's starters threw a complete game on each of the last three days, allowing Michael Wuertz and Craig Breslow - the best bets for non-Bailey A's saves - to rest since July 28.
  • Dan Wheeler stepped in last night for an unavailable Rafael Soriano, facing only one batter to induce a game-ending double play for the Tampa Bay Rays save. It was Wheeler's second save in a five-day span; his July 29 closure also came on the heels of a busy period for Soriano. Wheeler is a decent AL-only reliever but shouldn't be chased in any other format.
