In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up? KFFL.com's Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Key

Job security (JS) score 1 (unstable) to 5 (untouchable)
Health (H) score 1 (injury-prone) to 5 (durable)

Baltimore Orioles

Closer: Jim Johnson

Understudy: Kam Mickolio

Lurkers: Cla Meredith, Matt Albers

Disabled list: Mike Gonzalez

Gonzalez (shoulder) will miss at least three weeks of action. Despite an MRI showing no new structural damage, skipper Dave Trembley said there's "some wear and tear" on Gonzalez's shoulder. Gonzalez will report to Baltimore's minor league complex to begin rehab.

Johnson will be the majority fill-in for save chances, but Mickolio is also an option. Hopefully, you were aware of these possibilities and have picked up Johnson everywhere and Mickolio in ALs and your saves-desperate deep mixed team.

Cleveland Indians RP Kerry Wood
The Tribe could use Wood

Job security score: 2

Health score: 4

Mound meetings

  • Sidelined Cleveland Indians closer Kerry Wood (back) tossed a 27-pitch bullpen session before Thursday's contest. The Tribe is deciding whether Wood should perform a minor league rehab assignment or simulated throwing sessions.
He'll probably face live hitters within the next several days. The way Chris Perez has been struggling, they might renege on their vow to bring the fragile Wood along slowly; he's already ahead of schedule.
  • Brandon League, a sleeper for saves, has ditched his glasses; the brim of his Seattle Mariners cap sits too low and disturbs his specs. The talented Seattle Mariners righty delivered two scoreless frames in his first outing wearing contact lenses. Don't underestimate the little changes that can alter a pitcher's performance.
