Fantasy football sleepers: DT - Week 17

by Tim Heaney on December 30, 2010 @ 11:16:00 PDT

In this article KFFL breaks down the fantasy football sleepers of the week. We will avoid marquee names because players of that caliber are rarely benched, regardless of their matchup. Instead, we will focus on the players that make your fantasy lineup decisions stressful each week. Read on to learn which midrange to low-end players you wouldn’t necessarily consider that you need to get into your lineup.

Note: All statistics are from Week 13 to Week 16, unless otherwise stated.

Fantasy football sleepers: Defensive teams

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 1

  • The Cards can occasionally be a boom fantasy play - they had five sacks last week along with two defensive touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, they've sacked quarterbacks just 1.67 times per game from Week 13 to Week 15, so they're an erratic defensive unit.
  • Shaky or not, facing the 49ers can rejuvenate any defense, whether Alex Smith or Troy Smith takes the snaps. San Fran has allowed 4.00 sacks and 0.75 interceptions per game since Week 12, when the Niners actually beat the Cardinals handily.
  • Either way, the 49ers' offensive struggles are enough to take a chance on the boom-or-bust birds, who are a handy one-week play if you're starved for a defense in your fantasy Super Bowl.

St. Louis Rams at Seattle Seahawks

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 1

  • The Rams have become an aggressive defense again, recording 3.00 sacks, 1.50 interceptions and 0.50 fumble pickups per game since Week 12; they've faced the Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in that time.
  • Enter the Seahawks, who might have to roll with Charlie Whitehurst at QB if Matt Hasselbeck (hip) can't go. Bully for the Rams: This combo of questionable QBs has combined to allow 2.25 sacks and 2.00 interceptions per game.
  • Seattle's juicy opportunity to give the Rams fantasy points makes St. Louis a one-week play off your waiver wire.
