Mound meetings

It's looking "tough" for Brian Wilson (elbow inflammation) to return from the DL Aug. 31, the first day he's eligible, per San Francisco Giants skipper Bruce Bochy. He played seven minutes of catch Thursday and reported no issues. He'll have his arm re-evaluated Friday to see if he can ramp up his rehab; he might need a farm stint before reinstatement.
Meanwhile, Sergio Romo (elbow inflammation) will likely be activated from the DL Sunday if his Friday rehab game goes well. He'd probably take over closer duties for as long as Wilson remains sidelined and should be added by save chasers immediately; any potential waiver deal for the San Diego Padres' Heath Bell looks dead.
  • Though it's uncertain whether the Minnesota Twins have placed him on waivers yet, Joe Nathan said Wednesday he'd consider approving a trade to a contending team if Minny could swing something. Nathan earned 10-5 rights earlier this season, so he controls his fate on the swap market.
The Twins might want to keep Nathan around past this season, but this is something to watch, especially if you own Minnesota's all-time closures leader. The squad would go with Glen Perkins or Matt Capps, or maybe a matchup combo of both, if Nathan were to be shipped out.
