Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde
Papa Grande was sick

Mystery solved: Jose Valverde sat out Thursday's Detroit Tigers save chance due to illness.

He said before Friday's contest that he was sore but ready to return. He did so Saturday and Sunday, each night recording a scoreless frame and logging a closure.

He's now at 34 wrap-ups, a decent number that should in theory boost his case on the free-agent market that he's likely to test as a newly minted Scott Boras client.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed before Friday's game that Bobby Parnell would close for the remainder of the season with Frank Francisco (elbow) injured. Parnell notched his sixth save of the year Friday night during a clean, one-strikeout inning. Grab him immediately.

Santiago Casilla re-entered the San Francisco Giants' closing picture Friday when he worked around two hits to register a scoreless two-out save, the 25th of 2012 for the former chairman. Don't go running to get him as the season closes, though. Bruce Bochy said primary plug Sergio Romo got the night off after slamming the door Thursday.

Romo, by the way, came back Sunday with a scoreless inning and his 13th save of the year.

Joe Nathan blew a save in Game 1 of Sunday's Texas Rangers twin bill but rebounded with a scoreless IP in the second contest for a successful conversion. He'll probably be rested Monday, at least, and Alexi Ogando would be the likely stopper if you're desperate to capture one off the waiver wire.
