Pros: The North Carolina State product enjoyed his best statistical season as a pro in his third year as a starter in 2008. Rivers passed for 4,009 yards and 34 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions (65.3 percent completion rate). He was sacked only 25 times behind what was a suspect offensive line. The Chargers have a plethora of weapons in their offense, and Rivers has full command of the system. An improved running game in 2009 is expected, which should help keep defenses honest. Rivers plays in the defensively inept AFC West. Norv Turner's offense employs a downfield attack, as illustrated by Rivers' 8.4 yards-per-attempt average. Rivers has shown to be a gritty player and plays through injury, having never missed a start in his three full years at the helm.

Cons: It's tough to imagine the Chargers' passing game flourishing in 2009 as it did in '08, because the running game should be stronger and the defense is likely to be better. Rivers threw only 478 times in 2008, too. It will be tough to match his 34 touchdown passes, and he offers almost nothing in the way of rushing production (113 career yards). 

Fantasy tip: In his prime, Rivers shouldn't drop off too much, if at all. We expect near 4,000 yards and 30 touchdown passes from him, which easily makes him a No. 1 fantasy quarterback. Draft him with confidence in the fifth round or later.
