West Virginia University quarterback Pat White, a senior, has declared himself eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft. He was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2007 and 2008, as well as being named the 2008 Fiesta Bowl Most Valuable Player. White is also the first and only NCAA quarterback to win four consecutive bowl games as a starter.

A versatile athlete, White was not only drafted to Major League Baseball twice but also holds the NCAA all-time rushing record for a quarterback (4,385 yards). The redshirt senior nonetheless posted impressive numbers in his 2007 and 2008 campaigns. He completed 144 passes for 1,724 yards and 14 touchdowns, in 2007. White followed that up with 180 completions for 1,842 yards and 21 touchdowns in '08.

Strengths

• Very elusive, fast and athletic for a quarterback (4.49-second 40-yard dash time)

• Could be a weapon on trick plays

Weaknesses

• Does not have the durability, size (6-foot 1/4, 197 pounds) or arm strength of an NFL quarterback
• Rough quarterback mechanics
• Likely to have a position switch but still raw as a route runner and pass catcher

Expected draft placement

There are two questions left to be answered by this prospect: Is he willing to switch to wide receiver? And if so, will he be able to produce at the NFL level? For now, we can only answer the first: White worked out exclusively as quarterback at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, but he said he'll be willing to make the switch if the right team tells him to.

Due to his inability to play quarterback in the NFL but freakish athletic ability, White is expected to be drafted in the third round and no later than the fourth round. The best fit for White is the Miami Dolphins, who have the 87th pick in the third round and could look to expand upon their success in the Wildcat package with such a versatile player.
