In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football sleepers of the week. We will avoid marquee names, because players of that caliber are rarely benched, regardless of their matchup. Instead, we will focus on the players that make your fantasy lineup decisions stressful each week. Read on to learn which midrange to low-end players that you wouldn't necessarily consider that you need to get into your lineup.
Fantasy football sleepers: Defensive linemen
Jay Ratliff, Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2
- Ratliff leads Cowboys defensive linemen with 3.3 total tackles (two solo) and 0.7 sacks per game over the first three weeks of the season.
- The Redskins are allowing 22.7 total tackles (17.7 solo) and 1.0 sack per game to this position this year.
- A healthy dose of Redskins running back Clinton Portis should mean a busy day for Ratliff.
Kenyon Coleman, New York Jets vs. Arizona Cardinals
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- Coleman finished with five solo tackles in Week 3 and is averaging 3.7 total tackles (3.3 solo) per game this season.
- Opposing linemen are averaging 24 total tackles (18.3 solo) and 1.3 sacks per game against the Cardinals this year.
John Henderson, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans
Fantasy value: Strong No. 3
- Henderson leads Jaguars defensive linemen with four total tackles (2.7 solo) per game this year.
- The Texans are giving up 28.5 total tackles (19.5 solo) and 1.8 sacks per game to this position since the season started.
Fantasy football sleepers: Linebackers
Stewart Bradley, Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2
- Bradley leads Eagles linebackers with 6.3 total tackles (5.3 solo) per game this season; he is also chipping in 0.3 sacks per game.
- The Bears are allowing 24.3 total tackles (21.3 solo) and 0.3 interceptions per game to this position over the first three weeks.
- Quarterback Kyle Orton has taken to the air often in the last two weeks, but running back Matt Forte (29.67 utilizations per game) should offer plenty of chances for Bradley to score fantasy points, as well.
Mike Peterson, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3
- Peterson is first among Jaguars linebackers with 5.7 total tackles (4.3 solo) per game this year.
- The Texans offense is giving up 28 total tackles (21 solo), 2.2 sacks, 0.5 interceptions and 0.5 fumble recoveries per game to opposing linebackers this year.
Boss Bailey, Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3
- Bailey (ankle) should be fine after suffering an ankle injury in Week 3; he was able to practice Wednesday, Sept. 24.
- Over the first three games of the season Bailey is averaging five tackles (3.3 solo) per game; he also has one interception this year.
- The Chiefs have allowed 28.3 total tackles (21.7 solo), 1.7 sacks and 0.3 interceptions per game to opposing linebackers.
- KC tapped quarterback Damon Huard to start Week 4. The Chiefs had not had a successful quarterback this year and should lean on the run. This should translate into ample chances for Bailey.
Fantasy football sleepers: Defensive backs
Bernard Pollard, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2
- Pollard sits second among Chiefs defensive backs with an average of 5.3 total tackles (4.3 solo) per game this season.
- Denver is allowing 32 total tackles (28 solo) and 0.7 interceptions per game to this position in 2008.
- Quarterback Jay Cutler is slinging the ball downfield often this year, meaning Chiefs defensive backs should have a productive fantasy workload.
Will Demps, Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- Demps leads Texans defensive backs in total tackles with 6.5 (3.5 solo) per game.
- The Jaguars are giving up the second-most tackles in the league to this position with 35.3 total tackles (29.3 solo) allowed per game; they are also allowing 0.7 sacks and 1.3 interceptions per game.
Ike Taylor, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- Taylor has contributed 5.3 total tackles (all solo) per game this season, leading all Steelers defensive backs.
- Opposing defensive backs are averaging 26 total tackles (22.5 solo), 0.5 fumble recoveries and 0.5 interceptions per game against the Ravens.
