Helton has put his surgically repaired hip through "way more violent" activities during training, and he is confident he will be able to swing a bat. He expects to be ready for the start of the regular season, which means he likely won't play many games in spring training. Helton expects to play first base on a regular basis. OFs Michael Cuddyer and Tyler Colvin and 3B Jordan Pacheco could all spell Helton at first from time to time.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said 2B Chase Utley (knees) should be 100 percent when spring training begins. Utley has been field groundballs several times a week. Trainer Scott Sheridan will evaluate Utley's progress in person next week.

Miami Marlins 3B Placido Polanco (back) said Wednesday, Jan. 9, that he is physically prepared for a full season as the team's third baseman. He also said his back is healthy. "I still had problems (in 2012), a lot of scar tissue and that area was weak. I was compensating a lot with my back and other parts of my body. Thank God, all that is in the past and I feel very healthy," Polanco said.

Free-agent OF Kosuke Fukudome (Yankees) is reportedly returning to play for the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese League. Fukudome's deal is for three years, but no financial terms were given.

Houston Astros 1B Jonathan Singleton was suspended 50 games Wednesday, Jan. 9, for violating minor league baseball's drug policy. Singleton will start serving the suspension for the first 50 games of the 2013 season. Singleton indicated that he tested positive for marijuana. He is expected to begin the year with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he is getting good reports on SP Roy Halladay's (shoulder) throwing this offseason. He said Halladay's mechanics are looking good and he is getting loose faster than before. Halladay will start throwing off of a mound later this month and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) did experience some shoulder soreness during his offseason throwing program but is fine now. Amaro said Hamels got aggressive during his program in October and contacted the team's trainer when he experienced the soreness. Hamels was shut down for a few weeks but is now doing fine and is throwing again. He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

The Chicago White Sox dispatched scouts to watch free-agent SP Javier Vazquez (Marlins) pitch Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Puerto Rico. Vazquez has not appeared in the majors since 2010. According to former Major leaguer Alex Cora, who is general manager of Vazquez's Puerto Rican team, Vazquez hit 95mph on his 83rd pitch of the night.

He is making his way back from a second Tommy John surgery, and he continues to work out under the supervision of the Giants. It's standard procedure for a free agent to rehab with his old team, with which he incurred the injury.
