Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has lost a significant amount of weight during his offseason conditioning program.

1B | Adam LaRoche | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Washington Nationals are not close to re-signing 1B Adam LaRoche as of Monday, Nov. 5, according to a person close to LaRoche and general manager Mike Rizzo. LaRoche has until Friday, Nov. 9, to accept his one-year, $13.3 million qualifying offer. LaRoche wants to return but only under a multi-year contract.


Second Baseman

2B | Danny Espinosa | Washington Nationals | Fantasy
The Washington Nationals are considering what to do at second base heading into the 2013 season, with both 2B Danny Espinosa and INF Steve Lombardozzi as options. Espinosa was the starter at the keystone all of last season, but he struggled from the left side of the plate (.233 average with 141 strikeouts). There is no talk of making Espinosa only a right-handed hitter.


Third Baseman

The New York Yankees claimed C Eli Whiteside off waivers from the San Francisco Giants Monday, Nov. 5.

The New York Yankees have started contract talks to re-sign C Russell Martin, and Martin is interested in coming back. Martin's agent, Matt Colleran, said other teams have already called to express interest in the free-agent catcher and said the market for his position will "take a little bit of time to develop."

Free-agent OF Cody Ross (Red Sox) was believed to be looking for a three-year, $25 million deal in his discussions with the Boston Red Sox.

OF | Starling Marte | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte, who will likely start in left field next season, is batting .346 with an on-base percentage of .452 in the Dominican Winter League this offseason.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Vernon Wells, presuming he's not traded in the offseason, will open next season as the team's fourth outfielder. The Minnesota Twins re-signed RP Samuel Deduno and P Esmerling Vasquez to minor league contracts.

SP | Gavin Floyd | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy,
The Chicago White Sox have indicated that they are willing to trade a starting pitcher this offseason in order to acquire a third baseman, and SP Gavin Floyd may be the most likely trade chip. The team picked up Floyd's $9.5 million option last week. "I suspect given this market for pitchers that is out there right now, I think we're going to hear from a lot of teams about our starting pitching depth," general manager Rick Hahn said. "I think we're going to be pretty popular in that regard vis-a-vis trades because we're in a better position than a lot of clubs right now."


Relief Pitcher

Free-agent RP Ryan Madson (Reds) wants to sign to be a team's closer this offseason. He's expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed free-agent RP Jairo Asencio (Cubs) to a minor league contract.

RP | Kyuji Fujikawa | free agent | Free Agents,
The Texas Rangers are interested in Japanese RP Kyuji Fujikawa and are among several teams to scout the right-hander. He was 2-2 with 24 saves and a 1.32 ERA in 47 2/3 frames with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese League this year. He would not have to go through the posting process because he is eligible for free agency. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Los Angeles Dodgers have also scouted Fujikawa.

RP | Joakim Soria | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Royals) said he's willing to serve as the setup man to free-agent RP Mariano Rivera (Yankees) if they New York Yankees call with interest in signing him this offseason. However, New York has yet to ask about Soria. Eight other contending teams have expressed interest in his services. Soria will be ready for spring training, but he is unlikely to pitch in major league games until May or June. "Joakim is not a greedy individual," agent Oscar Suarez said. "He wants to win so if it is (the) right situation he is probably not going to be a guy to wait until February. If he goes back to Kansas City, he loves the people and he will be part of the rebuilding process."

The Cincinnati Reds are still undecided on whether to use RP Aroldis Chapman as a starter or reliever next season, according to general manager Walt Jocketty. "It depends on if we re-sign (Jonathan) Broxton and (Ryan) Madson," Jocketty said. "Or if we get another closer." There is mutual interest in having both Broxton and Madson return.

RP | Joel Peralta | Tampa Bay Rays | Transaction,
The Tampa Bay Rays re-signed RP Joel Peralta to a new contract Monday, Nov. 5. Terms are not available, but a report out of the Dominican Republic had Peralta signing a two-year deal for $6 million with a $2.5 million option for 2015.

RP | Mariano Rivera | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the team still has faith that free-agent RP Mariano Rivera can return and fill the role of closer next season. "I believe in his ability to fill that job that he's always done," Cashman said. "He's never failed, and I know that knee is going to be good, so we look forward to returning him to the closer's role." The Yanks are likely to offer less than $15 million to Rivera for next season.
