He's been around a while and he's a veteran guy that's had good success."

Oakland Athletics RP Joey Devine (biceps) was shut down again Monday, April 2, as he has developed elbow soreness. He will see the team doctor in the next day or so. Devine's return date is uncertain at this point. He is already on the 15-day disabled list to start the regular season, but was eligible to come off the DL April 9.

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) was told Monday, April 2, that he will need surgery on his right thumb. Bailey will receive a second opinion Tuesday, April 3, and he could have the procedure Tuesday. Ps Mark Melancon and Alfredo Aceves are the favorites to serve as closer with Bailey out.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker reiterated that SP Aroldis Chapman's future remains in the starting rotation despite the decision to have him pitch out of the bullpen to start the year. "He's going to be a starter, a very good starter," Baker said. "He's on board with it. He anticipated it. He's a smart kid. He said he thought as much because we lost (Nick) Masset and (Ryan) Madson. Billy Bray isn't as sharp. He's not a candidate to be a late-inning lefty guy."

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura has yet to name a closer with opening day quickly approaching. "Hopefully, when we're winning in the ninth in the first game," Ventura said in response to a question about when he will reveal his closer. "I will know, and (the team) will know, but I just don't feel the need to tell everybody and make a statement about it." Ventura added RP Hector Santiago to the discussion, along with RPs Addison Reed, Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton.
