OF | Nelson Cruz | Texas Rangers | Fantasy
Texas Rangers strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez said OF Nelson Cruz needed to improve the muscle mass in his hips, glutes and hamstrings in order to keep him healthy over the course of an entire season. Cruz felt lifting during the season made him "tight," so he tried to become more flexible through exercises and stretching.

The problem wasn't with his exercises but that Cruz would curtail them and slack off as the season wore on, thus weakening his legs. "He's so nice that it's hard to get mad at him," Vazquez said. "But the easiest way to stay strong and healthy is to do the workouts before the game. Some people can afford to stop working out before the game. He can't." Vazquez wants to stay on top of Cruz to lift before games this year even if it creates tightness, and Cruz appears to be much more committed to that this season.

OF | Eric Thames | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays OF Eric Thames, who loves to work out hard in the offseason, realized after his first minor league season that there were pitfalls to bulking up too much for the upcoming season. "From doing some research on pitchers and their mechanics, and hitting, I felt like the biggest thing that killed me was my chest," Thames said. "I didn't do chest at all in the offseason, no pushups or anything, just because I felt like when my chest was tight I couldn't throw." Thames took interest in a book this offseason that was devoted to training and stretching for elite-level martial artists. He started doing an intense version of yoga while also weight training in the gym.

The workouts have helped Thames to become a much stronger defensive outfielder, something that was a knock on him in the past. He has better range of motion in his arm now, and he appears to have an easier time making strong throws into the infield this spring. "(Triple-A hitting coach) Chad Mottola said my throw looks 10 times better than it did last year and the year before, and that they're really happy with my progress so far," Thames said. "That was a goal for the offseason, and I feel like I achieved that, so it's just a matter of keeping it going throughout the year to help this team win." Thames seems to have a slight advantage over OF Travis Snider for the left field job in spring training.

OF | Johnny Damon | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles are unlikely to sign free-agent OF Johnny Damon (Rays). "I don't think so. I already signed Johnny Damon when he was 28," executive Dan Duquette said.

"I wasn't able to turn it over as much and get the drop or the fade as much as I'm normally accustomed to (last season)," Hamels said. "I was able to get away with it, because of the difference in speed and it still did move where I got a lot more ground balls than swings and misses. I'm just happy it does have the type of moment it does right now, because that's what I'm used to, and I like that feeling."

SP | Francisco Liriano | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy,
Minnesota Twins SP Francisco Liriano tossed three scoreless innings while giving up one hit and striking out five in his second Grapefruit League start against the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, March 8. SP | David Price | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy,
Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price (neck) injured his neck while toweling off following his second inning of work Thursday, March 8. "I was drying my head off after the second inning. It's happened to me two times before. I catch the back of my head and it pulls my head forward," Price said. "I felt it in the back of my neck." He has yet to incorporate his slider into his repertoire this spring. "It's when you try to stress getting deeper into your pitch counts," Lincecum said when asked when the numbers will start to take significance. "It's when you get to that 100-(pitch) peak and you gauge what you would try to do, because that is more realistic. It is more around the number of pitches you'd get in a regular-season game." He's not sure when he'll start throwing breaking pitches.

Oakland Athletics SP Brett Anderson (elbow) had another throwing session Tuesday, March 6, and manager Bob Melvin said Anderson is looking good, "almost to the point where you have to try to hold him back."
