After spending the entire 2010 season in low Single-A, San Francisco Giants catching prospect Hector Sanchez has made the big leap all the way to The Show this season. Today the Giants called up Sanchez after placing outfielder Pat Burrell (foot) on the 15-day disabled list.

Sanchez becomes the third catcher on the Giants' 25-man roster, joining Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart.

Coming into the season, the 21-year-old Sanchez was considered a fine defensive catching prospect, but his bat was considered average at best following a year where he hit .274 and posted a .730 OPS in the South Atlantic League.

In the hitter-friendly California League this season, Sanchez posted respectable numbers with a .301 with eight home runs, 46 RBIs and an .832 OPS in 176 at-bats with high Single-A San Jose. Despite the good baseball card stats, the switch-hitter didn't really show a firm grasp of the strike zone, drawing 41 strikeouts to five walks.

Oddly enough, the Giants were so impressed with Sanchez's start that they shipped him straight to Triple-A Fresno in June.

Facing much tougher competition at Fresno, the switch-hitter ended up registering a fine 13:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while hitting .305.

However, his average was very vanilla as he managed only five extra-base hits (all doubles) in 82 at-bats, good for a .366 slugging percentage.

Although Sanchez has hit a combined .302 this year, there seems to be some anomalies in his numbers, and he's had some luck on his side.

Based on previous scouting reports and statistical information, be very skeptical of Sanchez's breakout. While Sanchez does bring more intrigue to the table than Whiteside and Stewart, who are backup types, the youngster has been rushed to the bigs, and he will probably have a tough time adjusting to the quality of pitching.

Two All-Star Futures Game hurlers were promoted yesterday from Double-A to Triple-A.

Washington Nationals hurler Brad Peacock was transferred from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Syracuse after going 10-2, with a 2.01 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 98 2/3 Eastern League innings.

After tweaking his delivery and making it more deceptive this spring, Peacock has surfaced as one of the top pitching prospects in the upper minors. He has good command of a mid-90s fastball and complements it with a changeup and curveball.

Martin Perez, the 20-year-old Texas Rangers southpaw with three plus pitches, is headed to Triple-A Round Rock after spending parts of three seasons at Double-A Frisco. This year, the Venezuelan went 4-2, with a 3.16 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings.

After experiencing an erratic showing in his first Southern League start, Seattle Mariners pitching prospect James Paxton was masterful yesterday, striking out 11 batters over five innings in Double-A Jackson's 10-7 win over Carolina. The left-hander allowed three hits and walked only one batter. With his long delivery that is hard to repeat at times, control had been an issue for Paxton at times this season.

Cincinnati Reds first base prospect Neftali Soto smacked a solo home run (16) in the fourth inning off Paxton, the only earned run the southpaw surrendered on Thursday night.

In his first game back since suffering a broken hand in late May, Toronto Blue Jays third base prospect Brett Lawrie went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his return game with high Single-A Dunedin.

Prior to the injury, Lawrie had hit .354 with 15 home runs, 49 RBIs, 51 runs scored, 11 steals and a 1.092 OPS in 52 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He should continue to see time, maybe at various levels, before eventually landing with the big club within the next month.
