Fantasy Baseball Analysis Draft: Round 27

by KFFL Staff on February 22, 2011 @ 09:58:00 PDT

1) A.J. Burnett, SP, New York Yankees

Team: Collin Hager, | Roster

Very little risk at this point in drafting a guy that could strike out 180 if he can keep his head on straight. New mechanics, new coach, maybe a better result.

2) Matt Capps, RP, Minnesota Twins

Team: Steve Gardner, USA Today | Roster

With Joe Nathan as my second closer, I'm just buying some insurance with Capps. If Nathan isn't ready for opening day, I'm still covered with a guy who got the job done last year.

3) Ryan Ludwick, OF, San Diego Padres

Team: Nicholas Minnix, KFFL | Roster

Needed an OF before the season begins in case I lose one, because first FAAB period is one week in. Considered Wade Davis here, but thought I might be able to land him in FAAB, until I saw him get drafted later in this round.

4) Cliff Pennington, SS, Oakland Athletics

Team: Jeff Paur, RTSports | Roster

I needed steals and Pennington was the best option available. I'll use him on occasion to help me boost that category.

5) Alexi Casilla, 2B/SS, Minnesota Twins

Team: Harold Nichols, Baseball HQ | Roster

Should be MIN SS, also qualifies at 2B. Steals one base per 20 AB, so has 30 SB upside in full-time role.

6) Ty Wigginton, 1B/2B/3B, Colorado Rockies

Team: Eriq Gardner, Fantasy Ball Junkie | Roster

How do you spell infield insurance? W-i-g-g-i-n-t-o-n. No starting gig yet, but 8 million reasons why he finds the at-bats.

7) Alex Avila, C, Detroit Tigers

Team: Joe Hamrahi, Baseball Prospectus | Roster

As you can tell, I'm not really sold on any of my catchers. Avila had a nice second half last year, and I hope he can build on that success. The presence of Victor Martinez may or may not help. Time will tell.

8) Ryan Madson, RP, Philadelphia Phillies

Team: Ray Flowers, Baseball Guys | Roster

Best pitcher, skill wise, left amongst relievers. Still, I gave heavy consideration to Jake McGee who could close for Rays and Clay Hensley as a handcuff to my earlier Leo Nunez selection.

9) Hideki Matsui, DH, Oakland Athletics

Team: Pasko Varnica, Mastersball | Roster

A calculated risk this late in the draft.

10) Wade Davis, SP, Tampa Bay Rays

Team: Doug Anderson, RotoExperts | Roster

Very happy to get Davis this late. There's no doubt that was a slight disappointment last year, but his 6-1 record and 3.28 ERA in the second half show what he is capable of. I'll likely plug him in until Jake Peavy returns and then play it by ear.

11) Homer Bailey, SP, Cincinnati Reds

Team: Tim Heaney, KFFL | Roster

"Fighting for a rotation spot." He doesn't have options left; he'll make it for the chance to build on his late-season adjustments and success. I'll chase him for yet another season at this price.

12) Mike Aviles, 2B, Kansas City Royals

Team: Ryan Lester, Lester's Legends | Roster

Aviles showed a little pop in September, swiped 14 bases and hit .304. He gives me depth at second base and middle infield.
