Jeff Samardzija, P, Chicago Cubs
The Notre Dame football star filled in for Carlos Silva (elbow) in an emergency yesterday and shut down the playoff-seeking St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits and four walks while fanning one.
So, here's the thing: Samardzija is talented, but he has yet to demonstrate
consistency as a professional. He has a 5.43 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 71 1/3 innings
in the majors. He has a 4.30 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in the minors. He also has
an escalating K/9 on the farm and has been jerked around between starter and
reliever for the past couple of seasons. Samardzija has added variety to his
repertoire, something he flashed in just his third big league start.
Samardzija has plenty of work to do in the free pass department, but if the
Cubs stick with him in this role, he could be solid. Monday's effort wasn't
special, despite the shutout, but Chicago will probably let him finish the year
in the rotation if Silva is sidelined. Expect bruises, but Samardjiza may put
up an Irish Fight, too. Next year, he'll have no minor league options. He may
once again be in a rush.
