Corner infielders

Alex Gordon, 3B, Kansas City Royals

KC called up Gordon because outfielder David DeJesus (thumb) went on the disabled list, not because they traded Alberto Callaspo. The Royals plan to let touted Mike Moustakas try out at third next spring. Gordon is running out of time, unless he's a revelation in the outfield, where he has played since he was demoted.

Royal pains continue for Gordon

At Triple-A Omaha, Gordon batted .315 with 14 homers and 44 RBIs in 260 at-bats. Gordon can probably play in left only, but that's where Scott Podsednik resides, ordinarily. Wilson Betemit is manning third. The Royals haven't cared thus far, but they would do themselves a disservice not to play Gordon. A heavy investment isn't in order, but Gordon has too much talent to be ignored. Another trade might help his situation more.

Pitchers

Sean O'Sullivan, SP, Kansas City Royals

TWO Royals? KC acquired the gritty O'Sullivan, along with minor league reliever Will Smith, to get jiggy wit- er, to stockpile arms. The right-hander is expected to join the rotation.

O'Sullivan held the New York Yankees to two runs in six innings in his only big league start of 2010. He posted a 5.92 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) last season, as a 21-year-old. For Triple-A Salt Lake this year, he was 5-5 with a 4.76 ERA, with 58 K's and 31 walks, in 85 innings (15 starts).

O'Sullivan has decent stuff but doesn't do anything extraordinary. He profiles as a back-end starter at best. He might eat some innings for you until the Royals get a couple of their injured hurlers back.

Trevor Bell, P, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Bell, 23, replaces O'Sullivan in the Angels' rotation, maybe until Scott Kazmir (fatigue) comes back. When Kaz comes back is another matter.

The right-handed Bell has been destroyed in his 39 2/3 innings of major league work, all of it this year coming in relief. He posted a 3.15 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake last year and had a 3.00 mark in 30 innings with them this season.

Bell is a competitor, but his stuff is mediocre. His secret to success is working quickly and establishing his fastball. He hasn't shown that he can do the latter in the majors, yet.
