Fantasy Football Analysis Draft - Round 12

1) Donnie Avery, wide receiver, St. Louis Rams
Team: Bryce McRae | Team Roster

Reason: Another wideout with decent upside to add to my stable. Avery is a big-play threat, and he should benefit actually playing with competent quarterback this year (Sam Bradford). I'm not a huge fan of his, but he has some room to grow, at least the most of any of the remaining receivers.

2) Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers
Team: Cory J. Bonini | Team Roster

Can he put offseason drama behind him?

Reason: I drafted Brett Favre as my starter, and his bye is Week 4 - no Big Ben that week. Roethlisberger is the best remaining quarterback should Favre suffer a long-term injury or, gasp, retire. I'm expecting Big Ben's suspension to be reduced to four games, and I know I'll have to draft another quarterback. 

3) Santonio Holmes, wide receiver, New York Jets
Team: Jared Byrd | Team Roster

Reason: Obviously, the main reason why he's available this late in the draft is the four-game suspension he'll have to serve at the beginning of the season. However, I feel the potential reward is worth the risk, considering he caught 79 passes for 1,248 yards last year.

4) Julius Jones, running back, Seattle Seahawks
Team: John Kotch | Team Roster

Reason: Although Justin Forsett is the projected starter, technically the running back competition in Seattle is up for grabs. However, due to his track record, it's difficult to envision Jones winning the job over Forsett and Leon Washington. I just figured I would take Jones here as a handcuff, and on the slim chance he could actually end up as the Seahawks' lead back.

5) New York Jets, defensive team/special teams
Team: Tim Piotrowski | Team Roster

Reason: With all of my other positions relatively stable, I decided to select the Jets' defense because of their great potential. They already have a fantastic secondary and the addition of Jason Taylor should help them have a better time getting to the quarterback.

6) San Francisco 49ers, defensive team/special teams
Team: Jack Douglas | Team Roster

Reason: Head coach Mike Singletary has instilled a fire and lots of determination into the 49ers. In 2009, their defense totaled 44 sacks, picked off 18 passes and played with the drive and intensity one would expect from an outfit commanded overall by a tough leader like Singletary. They benefit from six games against the St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, all of whom have serious offensive problems. This is an up-and-coming team with a favorable schedule.

7) Chad Henne, quarterback, Miami Dolphins
Team: Keith Hernandez | Team Roster

Reason: Henne showed signs that he could become a solid fantasy football QB in the final weeks of the '09 season, throwing for at least 322 yards in the last three games. Obviously I'm not planning on utilizing Henne much with Aaron Rodgers as my No. 1, but in the event that Rodgers goes down, Henne could put up respectable numbers to get me by. Throwing to big-play receiver Brandon Marshall should only help his numbers.

8) Louis Murphy, wide receiver, Oakland Raiders
Team: Ryan R. Bonini | Team Roster

A No. 2 QB with upside

Reason: There are a couple of other high-upside backs I looked strongly at here, but I felt they may fall to me in the next round and I need to add more depth to my deep receiver corps. Enter Murphy. I have some sure picks at the position, but Murphy offers a lot of cheap, low-risk upside. I love what the Raiders have done during the offseason, and Murphy looks to have the most potential of any of their receivers on roster. In his second year with a decent quarterback, he could flourish.

9) Minnesota Vikings, defensive team/special teams
Team: Mike Egnak | Team Roster

Reason: The Vikings defense was one of top units last season, forcing 24 turnovers and finishing with 47 sacks. They also have one of the more dangerous returners in wide receiver Percy Harvin, giving them an opportunity to find the endzone once in a while.

10) Javon Ringer, running back, Tennessee Titans
Team: Ilan Mochari | Team Roster

Reason: I was lucky enough to land Chris Johnson with the third overall pick, so it was time to grab his insurance policy. You could argue the 12th round is too early to snag a second-year pro like Ringer, who has merely 48 rushing yards to his name. However, when Julius Jones came off the board at No. 134, I realized the poaching of backup backs had begun - and I did not want to lose my most vital handcuff. Also, Ringer is talented in his own right. At Michigan State, I viewed him as a workhorse. But his speed - as displayed on kickoff returns and in his 32-yard burst in Week 6 last year - translated much better to the NFL level than I thought it would. If he inherits LenDale White's 64 carries, I think he'll easily outdo White's 3.5 per carry.

11) Tashard Choice, running back, Dallas Cowboys
Team: Tim Heaney | Team Roster

Reason: Considered Toby Gerhart, but Choice has a better shot at falling into featured touches - Marion Barber III is injury-prone and wearing out his welcome a bit. Choice can catch and run inside - a legit goal line option if given the chance. As my No. 5 back, he holds nothing but upside, since he'll already see reps as part of the three-headed monster. That's enough for a bye fill-in.

12) Toby Gerhart, running back, Minnesota Vikings
Team: Nicholas Minnix | Team Roster

Reason: No matter where you stand on Gerhart's potential, he's the obvious handcuff to the league's best back. Gerhart would at least provide something serviceable in my flex spot if AD bit the dust. He has more athleticism than some critics give him credit for. Gerhart can be the ideal closer when the Vikes safe leads and, in the right scenario (no Brett Favre), could be a low-end fantasy play in some weeks.
