Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat - NL

by Bryce McRae on July 9, 2010 @ 12:00:00 PDT

In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up?'s Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Mound meetings

  • Philadelphia Phillies RP Brad Lidge
    No relief from Lidge, Madson
Ryan Madson didn't break his toe after this blown save. In Madson's first appearance since his April 28 blown save, the Philadelphia Phillies' setup man gave up two hits and one run while striking out three in the eighth. The tying run came on a wild pitch, though, that catcher Brian Schneider admitted he failed to block correctly.
Add Madson to your watch list in deep mixed leagues. He probably won't contribute much initially, but he's the next-in-line if anything happens to Brad Lidge, who blew his third save in his last four opportunities last night. Manager Charlie Manuel gave Lidge another vote of confidence after the game.
  • Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez (ankle) tweaked his ankle when outfielder Mike Stanton ran into the bullpen gate, causing it send Nunez falling back 10 feet. Nunez said he felt something pull but is fine. He would've been available if needed, per manager Edwin Rodriguez.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers' Trevor Hoffman might be losing some of the goodwill he built up with his improved June (3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP). The Hoff gave up two runs on three hits and one walk yesterday. He was used in the ninth with the Brew Crew down 7-3. He also gave up a run on two hits July 2.
John Axford hasn't had a save chance since July 1, but his job security could be improving with Hoffman reverting to his previous form.
