Bengie Molina, C, Texas Rangers

Pennington: things are looking up

Upon approval of a Wednesday trade, the Rangers' shaky backstop picture would become stronger. Molina, on the other hand, has faded after posting a .344 April clip. He turns 36 in a few weeks, and his power looks barren; lingering elbow soreness might have contributed to that.

In single-universe leagues, though, Molina's league and ballpark switch offer a giant midseason opportunity to move ahead of the pack. He still makes top-notch contact for a backstop, and he clubs a decent amount of flies, so some Arlington-aided power could help your squad in the second half. It's safe to say Molina won't be forced to bat in the middle of Texas' order, either, so he might be more comfortable.

With the catcher position still a liability in many deep formats, you have to at least jump on the potential he could improve with a few extra bucks on a FAAB bid.

Corner infielders

Josh Bell, 3B, Baltimore Orioles

The O's placed Luke Scott (hamstring) on the DL and called up one of their top prospects. Bell was hitting .266 with 10 dingers and 44 RBIs in 74 games for Triple-A Norfolk. He recovered after a slow April, hitting .277-7-34 with 26 runs in 202 at-bats since then.

How much PT Bell will see remains to be seen, especially since Felix Pie (back) could return soon and make the corner infield and outfield picture more crowded. Bell's plate discipline was still an issue at Norfolk (75 K's, 18 walks), and he still has trouble against southpaws.

The O's probably want to try out their future, and mixed leaguers could be liberal with a trial if they have a spot to use on a lotto ticket. He has enough power potential to keep him at your fingertips in deeps.

Middle infielders

Cliff Pennington, SS, Oakland Athletics

Pennington was hitting .205 after June 12 action. Since, he's up to .248 heading after Wednesday after going 20-for-44 with 11 runs and three stolen bases.

He quietly has taken 11 bases this year, and he has a decent batting eye. An increased liner percentage and a decent contact rate make him a potential second-half batting average boon. Batting ninth hasn't hurt his run total. Steal- and MI-hungry owners could at least ride his streak.
