In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up?'s Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Job security (JS) score 1 (unstable) to 5 (untouchable)
Health (H) score 1 (injury-prone) to 5 (durable)

Mound meetings

  • Rather than wait for John Grabow or another reliever to blow it for the Chicago Cubs yesterday, manager Lou Piniella called on Carlos Marmol for a four-out save. Marmol's four outs were not perfect (one hit, one walk in the ninth), but he has the stuff to pitch out of jams - inherited and created. Piniella doesn't want to use Marmol for many four- or five-out saves; it's too long of a season, he says. He doesn't really have a choice until someone in the setup corps steps up.
  • Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol

Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez needed just 10 pitches to sit down the New York Mets in a perfect ninth yesterday. Combine that inning with his 30 pitches over 1 1/3 innings Wednesday, and Nunez probably won't be available Friday evening.
  • Philadelphia's Brad Lidge (elbow) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Thursday that the Phillies called "very good." They have yet to announce a timetable for Lidge's return.
  • Meanwhile, Phils skipper Charlie Manuel says he would prefer to keep Ryan Madson's appearances to one frame to make sure Lidge's stand-in is available often - maybe as often as four or five times a week. The declaration came after Manuel inserted Madson for a four-out save - which required only 13 pitches, Manuel noted - Wednesday.
