Updating previous reports, Houston Astros 1B Lance Berkman (knee) underwent successful surgery to remove cartilage debris in his left knee Saturday, March 13, according to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle. Manager Bradley Mills said the level of concern "has gone way down" because no ligament or meniscus damage was found. Berkman rejoined the club to begin his rehabilitation Sunday, March 14, which included leg raises, quadriceps flexes and icing his leg. "It's pretty mundane stuff but important to get everything fired up again," he said. "In two weeks, I'll be able to do pretty much everything. I'm not sure they're going to want me to play in a game at that point, but I think two weeks, and I think I should be pretty much back to normal."

The Boston Red Sox have reassigned Ps Randor Bierd, Casey Kelly, Kris Johnson, Robert Manuel, Adam Mills and Kyle Weiland, 1B Lars Anderson, C Luis Exposito, SS Jose Iglesias, SS Yamaico Navarro and OFs Ryan Kalish and Che-Hsuan Lin to minor league camp, according to MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo.


Second Baseman

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said backup SS Julio Lugo (groin) could miss a week due to a strained groin, according to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Lugo suffered the injury in his fourth and final at-bat of the game against the Houston Astros Saturday, March 13. IFs Tyler Greene and Felipe Lopez will split time at shortstop while Lugo and starter Brendan Ryan (wrist, toenail) are sidelined.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports the Oakland Athletics have reassigned IFs Dallas McPherson, Jemile Weeks and Corey Wimberly (calf) to minor league camp. Wimberly has not played because of a calf strain, but said he will return to action soon.

2B | Brian Roberts | Baltimore Orioles | Injury News, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, Baltimore Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (back) will fly to Baltimore Sunday, March 14, where he will be evaluated by back specialist Dr. Lee Riley of The Johns Hopkins Hospital Monday, March 15, according to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli. He is expected to receive epidural anesthesia to treat the slight herniated disc suffered during offseason workouts at the Athletes Performance Institute in Arizona. Roberts has been limited in baseball activities and hasn't hit in five or six days. "At this point, I don't have anything that gives me major trouble or discomfort," he said. "I mean, I've had some discomfort. Hitting was probably the biggest issue at that point. We're trying to push it forward as best as we can." Roberts will rejoin the team in Sarasota, Fla., no later than Tuesday, March 16.


Shortstop

Updating previous reports, Boston Red Sox OF Ryan Westmoreland (brain) will undergo brain surgery Tuesday, March 16, after being diagnosed with a cavernous malformation, according to The Associated Press. The team said Westmoreland left minor league camp March 4, and was diagnosed the following day at Massachusetts General Hospital. A cavernous malformation of cavernoma is a cluster of abnormal or dilated blood vessels affecting the central nervous system, with symptoms such as bleeding in the brain, seizures and headaches.

Updating previous reports, Chicago White Sox OF Jared Mitchell (ankle) will undergo surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle Tuesday, March 16, according to The Associated Press. He will be evaluated Monday, March 15, before having surgery at an outpatient medical center in Scottsdale, Ariz. No timetable will be available for his recovery until the operation is complete.
