According to The Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim probably will open 2010 with IF Brandon Wood at third base, but the slugging prospect isn't necessarily guaranteed an everyday spot. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said utility IF Maicer Izturis, who plays shortstop, second and third, is "a natural to lead off," and if the switch-hitter emerges as the team's best leadoff option, he will probably cut into Wood's playing time at third.


Third Baseman

Beltre's initial asking price is believed to be five years and $65 million, which would represent a $1 million raise on the deal he signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2004. However, Beltre, who turns 31 in April, is unlikely to see that total from any team, with $10 million annually more realistic.

The reason for the holdup is the review of medical information because of Lowell's surgically repaired hip. The trade, which also involves the transfer of likely $8-9 million, must first be reviewed by commissioner Bud Selig. The Red Sox are also looking at the medical records of C Max Ramirez, who had some wrist issues in 2009.
