In order to stay in shape, he has hired a nutritionist and is undergoing a grueling workout regimen which includes mixed martial arts and boxing exercises. "I've never worked so hard in the offseason as I have this one," Sheffield said. "I'm 100 percent dedicated to my training. When people tell me I can't do something, I prove them wrong. Just like people thought I couldn't play the outfield last year. I showed them I could. My shoulder came back last year so I can make the throws from the outfield. I feel I still have value." Sheffield said he would be willing to serve as a designated hitter, but would also like to play in the field several times a week. He has 2,689 career hits, and said his family wants him to keep playing until he reaches the 3,000 hit mark.
