Fantasy baseball waivers and discarded fantasy baseball players can make or break a season. You may have adjusted your fantasy baseball cheat sheets over and over during spring training. If your team remains the same after opening day, though, you will probably have trouble competing in your rotisserie baseball league.

When is it time to give up on your fantasy baseball sleepers? Which players are worth retaining? KFFL.com's Diamond Market series gives you the fantasy baseball tips and advice you need to sort through the masses quickly.

Key

Discard - Drop player (in most circumstances)

Stash - Hold player if roster space is available; consider dropping if trend continues

Hold - Do not drop player (in most circumstances)

Outfielders

Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers

Hamilton (back) hasn't played since Sept. 2 and shows to be in no rush of coming back because he doesn't want to risk further injury. His ownership is still very high; with only 17 games left, it's probably time to let him go if you don't have room to retain him.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Stash

AL-only: Hold

Starting pitchers

Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros

The 'Stros shut down their ace for the rest of their lost season. He isn't considering surgery but will be examined to see if his back problems will be chronic. You know what to do for this season, at least, but keep an eye out if any news surfaces.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Discard

NL-only: Discard

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo
Gallardo may be shut down

There's talk the Brew Crew may shut down Gallardo, who has fallen off late in the season (5.91 ERA since July). His 180 2/3 innings may be wearing him down after he pitched just 24 the season before. If you can afford to take the chance in pitching him again, his next start would come Sunday in a favorable matchup against the Houston Astros. Otherwise, you may want to consider moving on.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Stash

NL-only: Hold

Relief pitchers

Franklin Morales, Colorado Rockies

With Huston Street (biceps) reportedly coming back into the closer role Tuesday, you should plan to drop Morales if saves were his only use to you. He has been faltering elsewhere of late, and you can probably cycle in other relievers.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Stash

NL-only: Stash
