Fantasy football sleepers: Defensive teams

Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers

Fantasy value: Strong No. 1

  • The Falcons manhandled the Miami Dolphins in the opener, recording three sacks, recovering three fumbles and picking off one pass. They also held a decent rushing attack in check.
  • The Panthers, meanwhile, dealt with five turnovers at the hands of quarterback Jake Delhomme; Carolina also surrendered five sacks. While it's hard to count on this happening again, it doesn't seem that Delhomme has found a rhythm yet in this young part of the season.
  • You can't discount the fact that Panthers back Jonathan Stewart (Achilles') probably isn't at full strength yet.

Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 1

  • Hold on. We can explain. Tailback Adrian Peterson is licking his chops - but remember who's taking snaps for the Norsemen. Though he may not have to throw much given the Lions' shoddy run D, Brett Favre has been known to turn the ball over frequently. Plus, Minnesota allowed four sacks to the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.
  • Despite being trampled, the Lions picked off New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees once last week. It helps if your league doesn't penalize much for your points allowed. It's a bit risky, yes, but if have few alternatives, the Lions offer a sneaky play for their potential turnover and sack gains.

NEW - Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Fantasy value: Strong No. 1

  • Green Bay's defense was nothing short of ferocious against the Chicago Bears in Week 1, notching four interceptions and two sacks.
  • Cincy's offense gave away two interceptions and allowed three sacks against a suspect Denver Broncos defense.
