Updating previous reports, Brian Lewis, of the New York Post, reports New York Mets 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) is ahead of schedule in his rehab and the team is saying he could return by Aug. 1. "Very, very encouraging. That's a part of the progression. He's right on schedule, if not ahead of schedule," manager Jerry Manuel said. "I'm not certain of mid-August. I'm thinking as long as there are no setbacks, and we're progressing, I'm thinking better than that."


Second Baseman

2B | Brian Roberts | Baltimore Orioles | Injury News, Fantasy

The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Orlando Hudson (knee) left the team's game in the seventh inning Thursday, July 9, after getting hit above the left knee by a pitch. Hudson said he was fine and expects to play Friday, July 10. Hudson finished the game Thursday 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs before getting replaced by 2B Juan Castro.

2B | Emmanuel Burriss | San Francisco Giants | Injury News, Fantasy
Rusty Simmons, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco Giants 2B Emmanuel Burriss (toe) will miss at least two months after he undergoes surgery to fix a broken toe on his left foot. The surgery will be performed Friday, July 10.


Shortstop

The Palm Beach Post reports Florida Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez (hip) entered as a pinch-hitter Thursday, July 9, and singled to right in his first at-bat since Saturday, July 4. Ramirez, who'd missed five straight starts because of a nagging right hip flexor, drew a walk later in the inning then stayed in the game to play defense. Ramirez said he thinks he can play Friday, July 10.

SS | Yunel Escobar | Atlanta Braves | Injury News
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Braves SS Yunel Escobar (back) left the team's game in the fourth inning Thursday, July 9, with a lower back strain. His status is described as day-to-day by the team. Escobar finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored before getting replaced by SS Diory Hernandez.

SS | Yuniesky Betancourt | Seattle Mariners | Injury News, Fantasy
Christian Caple, of MLB.com, reports Seattle Mariners SS Yuniesky Betancourt (hamstring) could play second base when he returns to the team. Manager Don Wakamatsu wants Betancourt to play at least two games, one at shortstop and one at second base, before being activated from the disabled list. He will likely rejoin the team after the All-Star break.

His injury does not restrict him defensively, which could make him available as part of a double switch this weekend. Soto will be re-evaluated Friday, July 10.

Jose De Jesus Ortiz, of The Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Astros OF Darin Erstad (hamstring) had a tender hamstring, which is why he was replaced in left field by OF Matt Kata to resume the suspended game Thursday, July 9. "Darin has a little nagging injury," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. "And it was probably not best to put him on the defensive end. … He's having a hamstring problem. He's available to pinch hit."

Amalie Benjamin, of the Boston Globe, reports Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (shoulder) has been working out at the team's spring training facility in Florida and is doing well. Matsuzaka is still throwing from 60 feet on flat ground.

Barry M. Bloom, of MLB.com, reports San Diego Padres SP Chris Young (shoulder) and C Nick Hundley (wrist) could both be out of action until August, according to manager Bud Black. Young threw off a bullpen mound Monday, July 6, and reported normal soreness. However, he is slowly working back into shape and is weeks away from a possible rehab assignment. "He won't be pitching in a major league game anytime soon. He'll have to go through a number of sides and simulated games under our eye before we send him out on some rehab situations. So, in the best-case scenario, we're looking at the end of July or the first of August," Black said.

Paul Sullivan, of The Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Cubs SP Ryan Dempster (toe) could miss up to a month after breaking the big toe on his right foot Sunday, July 5. He has a non-displaced fracture of the toe and will eventually need to lose the nail on the toe. Dempster could miss as many as six or seven starts. He will wear a boot on his foot, which will allow him to continue to throw and keep his arm strength up.
