Quarterback

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the team plans to simplify things for QB Philip Rivers. McCoy said Rivers gets in trouble when he tries to do too much, but it's on the entire offense to become more consistent. "We got to get him going back to the basics," McCoy said. "Take what the defense gives you. Don't be afraid to check it down. You don't have to make that big play every play. We are going to do some different things in the passing game with him to raise the completion percentage, get the ball out of his hand a little bit quicker."

Wide Receiver

Carolina Panthers WR Domenik Hixon could be considered the favorite for the No. 3 wide receiver job because of his previous experience with general manager David Gettleman. Hixon will have to compete with other wide receivers for the job during training camp.

Chicago Bears WR Joe Anderson appears to be the most prominent of a group of receivers vying for the final two or three spots for the position on the team's 53-man roster. He can play special teams, and QB Jay Cutler has praised him. WR Eric Weems was signed last year to play on special teams, but he contributed little on offense, and that doesn't seem likely to change.


Tight End

"The position as a whole, I think they're working their tails off," Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said. "Certainly we need to have production out of that position. So we need them to come up big."

In the case of murder of Odin Lloyd against free-agent TE Aaron Hernandez, the prosecution may view Carlos Ortiz, who was allegedly present on the night of Lloyd's murder, as a star witness and grant him immunity. According to affidavits, Ortiz has been cooperating with authorities on numerous aspects of the investigation. However, Ortiz has a criminal record and drug history, so his credibility is likely to come under attack by the defense.


Offensive Tackle

Denver Broncos OT Ryan Clady says 2013 has the potential to be a big year for the team. "I've been working hard. ... Definitely a big step with us this year."

Baltimore Ravens CB Lardarius Webb (knee) has made significant progress in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and has not been ruled out for Week 1 at this point.


Strong Safety

Green Bay Packers safeties coach Darren Perry said he does not think FS M.D. Jennings or SS Jerron McMillian have an edge for the starting safety job next to FS Morgan Burnett. "I don't think either one of those guys separated themselves in terms of being 'that guy' at the end of the last season," Darren Perry said. "They both made strides and I think they're going to be fine football players, I really do. But in terms of who distinguishes themselves as 'the guy,' we're just going to have to wait and see and enjoy the competition."


Free Safety

"As long as the other team is punting, he's going to be back there. And hopefully they will be punting a lot."

The Green Bay Packers have signed FS Morgan Burnett to a four-year contract extension worth $24.75 million. The deal includes $8.25 million in guaranteed money.

FS | Jairus Byrd | Buffalo Bills | Free Agents
Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said the team worked hard to sign franchise free-agent FS Jairus Byrd to a long-term contract but the two sides were not able to reach an agreement. The team will continue to try to sign Byrd to a one-year contract.
