New York Mets 1B Ike Davis appears ready to rejoin the major league club in the near future with the team facing a string of right-handed pitchers in their next five games. However, 3B Josh Satin, who has been playing first base, is hitting .395 for the Mets. Davis is batting .269 in 19 games with Triple-A Las Vegas after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts Monday, July 1. "According to them he's made big progress. He's still got a little movement in his hands, but certainly not as drastic as it was. He's more upright. They said he's driving the ball the other way much better than when he got there. OF Michael Saunders (finger) is wearing a protective sleeve over his injured finger. He said the swelling must go down before he can return to the lineup.

San Diego Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko (groin) ran during batting practice on Monday, July 1, but manager Bud Black said the infielder is still without a timetable to return. "We're hoping, by the end of the week at least, he's back to moving around, running and getting closer to going back out to play a few more games," Black said. The bonus would be the highest ever given to a player from Europe. "Gasparini is one of the best athletes on the international market," Baseball America reported. "(He) has excellent speed and should play a premium position, with a lot of scouts projecting him as a center fielder." Gasparini is a switch-hitter who is 6-foot, 175 pounds and was ranked the 12th-best international prospect by BA.
