Roenicke indicated that the club's choice to skip Lohse is precautionary, because he didn't go through spring training. The manager said he hopes it's not a big deal, because Lohse didn't seem too concerned.
Any time an elbow issue pops up for a pitcher, of course it'll cause worry.

Andrews confirmed a diagnosis of a "30 to 40" percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder. The team doctor will perform the operation. According to those sources, Andrews told Garcia of his amazement that the pitcher was able to perform as well as he did considering the condition of the shoulder.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder) is encouraged by the results of his "rigorous bullpens," and the club is hoping that he'll be ready to join its rotation in late June or early July. GM John Mozeliak indicated that, when Carpenter decided to come back, the organization determined it would put him through rugged tests in order to avoid a scenario in which Carpenter would need to be shut down shortly after the team was to activate him. Carpenter has reached approximately 80 pitches in bullpen work at a simulated game pace. He may face hitters for the first time next week, if a session on Thursday goes well. St. Louis isn't promoting his return with a target date because of the uncertainty surrounding the situation, but Mozeliak called Carpenter's progress "very encouraging."
