New York Jets QB David Garrard will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the team's starting quarterback job, and if he stays healthy, may very well be the Week 1 starter, according to a rival team executive.

QB | Brandon Weeden | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
Although Cleveland Browns QB Jason Campbell will receive a chance to compete for the team's starting quarterback job, QB Brandon Weeden will most likely start in Week 1. The only way Weeden doesn't is if he struggles in training camp and the preseason. He has the strong arm that should mesh well in an offense run by head coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said he knows he has to prepare as if he will be the team's Week 1 starter at quarterback in case QB Robert Griffin III (knee) is not ready. "You feel that added excitement or added urgency to be ready to go," Cousins said. "We don't know what it's going to look like. He may be ready by mid-August. He may be ready mid-September, mid-October. I don't know. That's not my job. My job is to get myself ready and when called upon, deliver. And I'm going to do all I can between now and then to do that."

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed undrafted free-agent RB De'Leon Eskridge (San Jose State) and DE J.D. Griggs (Akron). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived RB Akeem Shavers, WR D.J. Monroe and DT Richard Clebert. The team also terminated the contracts of OG Roger Allen and DE George Selvie.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) is expected to begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list.


Wide Receiver

WR | Victor Cruz | New York Giants | Free Agents
New York Giants co-owner John Mara believes the team will eventually have a deal in place with restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz. "I'm pretty confident that we'll end up reaching a deal with (Cruz)," Mara said. "This is not that atypical a situation. Player contracts, particularly with star players like Victor, can tend to drag on from time to time. I think we'll get it done." Cruz has yet to sign his $2.879 million contract tender and reportedly seeks in the neighborhood of $10 million per year. The Giants are reportedly prepared to offer closer to $7 million.

WR | Jacoby Jones | Baltimore Ravens | Fantasy
The Baltimore Ravens will continue to search for a wide receiver this offseason after trading WR Anquan Boldin to the San Francisco 49ers. "I think the hunt goes on," assistant general manager Eric DeCosta said. "We're still working. The roster is not set. We're always evaluating. We're always looking at guys. Guys get signed, guys get cut ... Our pro personnel department looks at all available players and we'll make a decision at some point of what we want to do at that position. There are definitely some players out there. We'll consider all options." The Ravens are also banking on increased production from several wide receivers, including WR Jacoby Jones.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he agreed the team needed to draft a tight end if they were going to commit to using more two-tight end sets in the passing game. He said he has no problems helping second-round pick TE Gavin Escobar adjust. "There's no ego there for me," Witten said. "It's all about winning. That's part of being a leader and a captain - is to help other guys play at a high level. There's no hard feelings from that standpoint."

Doctors discovered the knee injury was not a severe issue and they believe he could play in 10 days if he had to, the source said. Slay will be ready for training camp.

Tennessee Titans S Robert Johnson (Lisfranc) is at about 80 percent health right now after suffering a torn ligament and Lisfranc fracture in Week 13. He hopes to be back by the middle of OTAs in June. "They put screws (in the foot) for that kind of injury and sometimes they leave them in there for life," Johnson said. "But with me, they kind of left it in for a few months and then recently took it out because the torn ligament in my foot has built back pretty well. So I'm excited."

FS | Ed Reed | Houston Texans | Injury
Houston Texans owner Bob McNair indicated FS Ed Reed (hip) could miss the beginning of training camp because of the hip surgery he had last week but should be ready by the middle of camp.

FS | Bacarri Rambo | Washington Redskins | Depth Chart Tidbit
The Washington Redskins coaches want their free safety and strong safety to be interchangeable this season. FS Phillip Thomas and FS Bacarri Rambo likely will be able to play either position because they played both safety positions during their college careers.
