Free-agent 1B Nick Johnson (Orioles) has decided to retire from baseball, according to WFAN in New York, and later acknowledged by Johnson on his Twitter feed. Johnson left the Baltimore Orioles in late June due to a wrist injury that had plagued him in his career, and he never returned. Johnson was attempting to come back from injury after not playing at all in the majors in 2011.

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond (oblique), who said he's feeling fine physically after spending time on the disabled list last year with an injury to his left oblique, has plenty of things that he would like to improve upon in 2013. "I'd like to cut down on the strikeouts, works some more walks, be a little more aggressive running the bases, pick up some more stolen bases and just try to help the team in any way that I feel like I can."

Updating an ongoing story, New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez was named 16 times in the Biogenesis records obtained the Miami New Times. He even had a nickname at the clinic, "Cacique," a pre-Columbian Caribbean chief. Rodriguez allegedly paid $3,500, Anthony Bosch notes. Below that, he writes, "1.5/1.5 HGH (sports perf.) creams test., glut., MIC, supplement, sports perf. Diet." HGH, of course, is banned in baseball, as are testosterone creams. Another document from the files, a loose sheet with a header from the 19th Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine, lays out a full regimen under the name Cacique: "Test. cream... troches prior to workout... and GHRP... IGF-1... pink cream." Yuri Sucart is also named in the files. Sucart was the cousin A-Rod admitted got him the performance-enhancing drugs that he admitted he took in the early 2000s. A-Rod is in records from 2009-2012.

Starting Pitcher

"My son works very, very hard, and he's as clean as apple pie," Max Gonzalez said. "I went to (Anthony Bosch) because I needed to lose weight. A friend recommended him, and he did great work for me. But that's it. He never met my son. Never. And if I knew he was doing these things with steroids, do you think I'd be dumb enough to go there?"

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels, in his first media interview since rumors of current shoulder soreness leaked, refuted any talk he had an injury but admitted there was some soreness in the offseason. "That's the honest truth. I wasn't the one who started it. I know I feel good and I'm ready to go. That's all I can really answer because that's where it is. It's the same program, and I'm looking forward to spring training and finally getting out of the cold," Hamels said.

Although the Cincinnati Reds haven't engaged SP Homer Bailey in talks for a long-term contract extension, the pitcher said he is open to the idea. "Nothing has been mentioned at all," Bailey said. "If it happens, it does. I don't know what their thoughts on it are. If it was ever brought up or brought to the table to us, it would be something to consider. I haven't really heard anything. I'm just getting prepared for the season. It's all I can do." He has already started a throwing program and will start working off a mound for the first time Tuesday, Jan. 29.
