The Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration with INF Jonathan Herrera Wednesday, Jan. 23, by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 deal. Herrera isn't a lock to make the roster this spring with INF Josh Rutledge shifting over to second base. INFs Chris Nelson, Jordan Pacheco, DJ LeMahieu and Ryan Wheeler will compete at third base. Herrera may compete directly with LeMahieu for a bench spot.
SS | Brendan Ryan | Seattle Mariners | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners SS Brendan Ryan (elbow) is fully recovered from offseason arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow, and he is throwing up to 120 feet and hitting and "doing all the things he was unable to do last year prior to spring training," according to team trainer Rick Griffin.

Cincinnati Reds SS Billy Hamilton will begin the 2013 season at Triple-A Louisville.
SS | Andrelton Simmons | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy
The Atlanta Braves are seriously discussing a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton Wednesday, Jan. 23, and they are believed to have made an offer packaged around young pitching. However, the Braves won't be parting with SS Andrelton Simmons in any deal for Upton, according to sources. The D-backs asked for Simmons earlier this offseason.

3B | Kevin Youkilis | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees RP Joba Chamberlain called new teammate 3B Kevin Youkilis shortly after his signing, leaving a voicemail. Chamberlain and Youkilis had numerous over the years while Youkilis was with the Boston Red Sox. While Youkilis said he wasn't bothered by the history with Chamberlain, the two have not yet spoken. "Am I surprised (he didn't return the call)? Not really. I'm bound to run into him at some point - sooner, rather than later, I'm assuming," Chamberlain said. "We'll see what happens."
C | Jesus Montero | Seattle Mariners | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners C Jesus Montero is viewed as the team's primary catcher, according to manager Eric Wedge.
C | George Kottaras | Oakland Athletics | Transaction, Fantasy

C | Mike Napoli | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox C/1B Mike Napoli has two ways to increase his deal to $13 million in 2013; stay on the active roster for at least 165 days or accumulate 625 plate appearances with at least 120 days on the active roster. He'll receive the full $8 million in performance bonuses for 165 days on roster, not including the disabled list. If he doesn't achieve that, he'll make $50,000 each for 30, 60, 90 and 120 days on the roster, $500,000 each for 300, 335, 350 and 375 plate appearances and $1 million each for 400, 475, 550 and 625 plate appearances.
C | Brian McCann | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) is hoping he'll be ready by the time opening day comes around, but he knows he'll have to be cautious in his return from surgery to fix a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He said "things are ramping up" in his rehab, and he began throwing last week and started running two weeks ago. McCann was initially expected to miss at least the first two weeks of the season.
OF | Thomas Neal | New York Yankees | Transaction
The New York Yankees signed free-agent OF Thomas Neal (Indians) to a minor league deal Wednesday, Jan. 23.
OF | Michael Bourn | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Mets are considering signing free-agent OF Michael Bourn (Braves), and they are seeking a ruling that would allow them to keep their first-round pick if they were to sign Bourn. The Pittsburgh Pirates landed a top-10 pick in the draft only after their first-round pick the previous year did not sign, which pushed the Mets to No. 11 overall. Under Major League rules, the top 10 picks in the first round are protected for teams that wish to pursue the top free agents. Still, it's unclear if New York would be able to meet Bourn's asking price.
OF | Franklin Gutierrez | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy
Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez has had a healthy offseason, including a solid showing in the Venezuelan Winter League. "He's not having any issues of any kind," trainer Rick Griffin said. "Anything he's had in the last three years, they do not exist. He's going in with good frame of mind and we're just hoping everything works out. He's been snake bit the last three years, but hopefully this year we can get back to the way things were."
OF | Alfonso Soriano | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Chicago Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano said he doesn't want to be rested frequently, especially after the team signed OF Scott Hairston, who could possibly be used to give Soriano more breathers throughout the season. "That's what they said to me last year, and I played a lot of games," said Soriano, who hit 32 home runs and drove in 108 runs in 151 games, his highest number of games played since joining the Cubs in 2007. "This year, I'm ready to play every day. I don't like to have a day off. I know I'm 37 years old, but I don't feel like it. I feel like I'm 25, 26, and that's what I want to do is play every day to win." Hairston could wind up in a platoon with OF Nate Schierholtz in right field.
OF | Justin Upton | Atlanta Braves | Transaction, Fantasy
Updating earlier reports, the Atlanta Braves will acquire 3B Chris D. Johnson along with OF Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks for 3B Martin Prado, SP Randall Delgado, SS Nick Ahmed, 1B Brandon Drury and P Zeke Spruill.

Seattle Mariners OFs Michael Saunders and Casper Wells will be working in all three outfield positions during spring training.
OF | Raul Ibanez | Seattle Mariners | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners OFs Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez will compete for time in the outfield. Ibanez has also been told to bring a first baseman's glove to camp. "I have a clear idea of how I see it playing out, but they'll ultimately determine that. Players make decisions for you," manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday, Jan. 23.
OF | Mike Morse | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy
Seattle Mariners OF Mike Morse will get a majority of his playing time in the outfield, but he is also available to play first base and perhaps even serve as a backup third baseman if needed.
OF | Jason Kubel | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles are not sold that Arizona Diamondbacks OF Jason Kubel's price is worth what they will need to give up to acquire him through a trade. Kubel would see most of his at-bats as the team's designated hitter with OF Nate McLouth re-signed, and they already have 3B Wilson Betemit who fits the DH role.
OF | Leonys Martin | Texas Rangers | Fantasy
Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin has a decent shot to make the team out of spring training as he competes with OF Craig Gentry for the center field spot. Martin probably has the best chance out of SS Jurickson Profar, 3B Mike Olt, OF Engel Beltre and C Jorge Alfaro at making the opening day roster. Martin has been compared to Boston Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury, who hitting coach Dave Magadan also worked with in Boston. "The ceiling is limitless on him. So we'll let him go at his pace and whatever we can to make him better, and he's definitely a lot like Jacoby in the way he's very coachable, very open. He's got that personality where he's very approachable, those are all good things," Magadan said.
OF | Evan Gattis | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy
The Atlanta Braves are believed to be conjuring up a "strong package" in order to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton, and a move may be made relatively quickly. The D-backs are believed to be interested in OF Evan Gattis, although they have more of a need for a leadoff hitter. Atlanta has plenty of young pitching to get a deal done for Upton, and the Bravos are not on Upton's no-trade list. It's believed he'd be willing to join his brother, OF B.J. Upton, anyway.
OF | Vernon Wells | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are expected to hold onto OF Vernon Wells and use him as a part-time player this season. Owner Arte Moreno was never willing to eat a large portion of Wells' remaining $42 million contract over two years. The Philadelphia Phillies were interested, but they just signed OF Delmon Young.
OF | Ryan Kalish | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox OF Ryan Kalish (neck, shoulder) said his body feels very strong heading into spring training, but swinging a bat is a bit of a challenge after undergoing neck and shoulder surgeries in 2011. "There's a point where you play with your pain and you know you're good and be able to give what you have, but if it gets to a point where it's too much, it's too much - and that's performance-based," Kalish said. Kalish and OF Daniel Nava have an opportunity to earn plenty of playing time in left field with OF Jonny Gomes.
SP | Chris Young | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The New York Mets are unlikely to re-sign SP Chris Young after agreeing to a one-year deal with SP Shaun Marcum.
SP | Jeremy Bonderman | Seattle Mariners | Injury,
Seattle Mariners SP Jeremy Bonderman (elbow) has already reported to Arizona and is throwing off a mound. Trainer Rick Griffin said he'll be on the same schedule as the rest of the pitchers when camp opens Feb. 12.
SP | Shaun Marcum | New York Mets | Transaction, Free Agents
The New York Mets signed free-agent SP Shaun Marcum (Brewers) to a one-year deal.
SP | Julio Teheran | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy,
The Atlanta Braves are likely to include SP Julio Teheran in any deal to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton. At least one other Atlanta pitching prospect, such as Ps Sean Gilmartin or Zeke Spruill, will need to be sent to Arizona, too. SS Nick Ahmed, could also interest the D-backs.
SP | Joe Saunders | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Seattle Mariners are interested in signing free-agent SP Joe Saunders (Orioles) if the Baltimore Orioles are unable to re-sign him. Saunders would likely play a more significant role with the M's, as their No. 2 pitcher is SP Hisashi Iwakuma, who has only 16 starts in his career.
SP | Kyle McPherson | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy,
Between Pittsburgh Pirates SPs Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson, who will both be starting rotation insurance heading into spring training, Locke is more likely to transition to a relief role if the team needs it at any point. Locke could become the second lefty in the bullpen along with RP Tony Watson. Locke gave up only one hit in 4 1/3 relief innings last year, and hitters typically have much more success the second time they see him in the same game.
SP | J.A. Happ | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
As of right now, Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ is the team's sixth starter after the offseason acquisitions of SPs R.A. Dickey, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle. Happ isn't assured a spot on the active roster heading into opening day, so he's a strong candidate to start the year with Triple-A Buffalo. "The one thing I did tell J.A. is that I'm almost 100 percent certain that we won't go through the season with just five starters," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "We'll definitely need somebody else, so he has to continue to do his part." Happ could make the team as a reliever, but that option appears unlikely. Happ has handled the situation well and hasn't requested a trade.
RP | Kyle Farnsworth | Tampa Bay Rays | Transaction
The Tampa Bay Rays have re-signed RP Kyle Farnsworth to a one-year deal. The deal could be worth as much as $3 million with bonuses.
RP | Scott Elbert | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury,
Los Angeles Dodgers RP Scott Elbert (elbow) underwent surgery for the second time in five months on his elbow after orthopedist Dr. Neal ElAttrache fixed a new area of cartilage damage in an arthroscopic procedure Wednesday, Jan. 23. He will begin physical therapy in a few days and resume a throwing program in roughly six weeks.
