Fantasy baseball players in the news

By KFFL Staff

First Baseman

1B | Lance Berkman | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 1B Lance Berkman (knee) said the right knee that limited him to only 32 games last year feels really good, and he feels like he can play first base if needed. "That's not the case this year," Berkman said. "There's nothing structurally wrong, it's just a matter of recovering from the surgery and getting stronger. The surgeries last year fixed the problem."

Second Baseman

2B | Ian Kinsler | Texas Rangers | Fantasy
Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the team plans to keep 2B Ian Kinsler at second base to start the 2013 season, meaning SS Jurickson Profar will likely begin the year in the minors. 3B Mike Olt is also likely to begin in the minors unless he has an everyday position at the major league level.

SS | Troy Tulowitzki | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (groin) said he is confident that he is fully healthy and can play at full speed. "Now I can tell you that I feel confident that I can play at full speed again. I do normal everyday activities and don't even worry about it anymore." He's been taking groundballs, hitting in the cages, working out and visiting with a physical therapist. His visits with a therapist have recently been reduced from five days a week to three. Tulowitzki will be evaluated during a workout next week before he is cleared to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Third Baseman

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez's (hip) doctor, Bryan Kelly, said A-Rod will be out about six months after surgery, and there could be cartilage damage that could conflict things. Kelly said steroids were unlikely to be a factor in the injury. The Yankees wanted Kelly to speak after the surgery, but A-Rod gave him authorization to speak.

3B | Kevin Youkilis | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Kevin Youkilis is expected to serve as the team's Opening Day third baseman, and he could fill that role for a while with 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) not expected back until after the All-Star break due to hip surgery.

OF | Adam Eaton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Injury, Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks OF Adam Eaton (hand) was not able to pick up his offseason workouts until December after breaking his right hand with a few games remaining last season. "It's going real well," Eaton said of his rehab. "I got cleared right before Christmas and I've been hitting for probably about three weeks or so. It feels great. There's no pain, there's no restriction of movement." If the team doesn't trade another outfielder, though, Eaton will likely begin this season at Triple-A Reno, but he's no doubt the solution in center field for the future, and he provides the D-backs with a good option at the leadoff spot.

OF | Ben Revere | Philadelphia Phillies | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Philadelphia Phillies will likely enter spring training with an outfield consisting of Ben Revere, Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr., Darin Ruf, and Laynce Nix. "We're likely going with what we've got," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. Amaro may change his mind for a low-risk veteran outfielder to join the system, as the club still has about $7 million of its projected $178 million payroll to spend.

OF | Mike Morse | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
The Boston Red Sox might be a fit for the Washington Nationals to trade OF Mike Morse, if they fail to finalize a deal with C Mike Napoli (hip).

OF | Tim Smith | Baltimore Orioles | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles signed free-agent OF Tim Smith (Braves) to a minor-league deal Tuesday, Jan. 8. The deal did not include an invitation to spring training.

OF | Nick Swisher | Cleveland Indians | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Cleveland Indians are in the market for a designated hitter, or some added offensive punch, but they are not believed to be a potential suitor for the services of Washington Nationals OF Mike Morse if the team elects to trade him. Morse will earn $7 million next season before becoming a free agent, and the Indians would likely need to trade a player with a comparable salary after spending during the offseason on the likes of SP Brett Myers, OF Nick Swisher, etc.

OF | Justin Upton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
The Seattle Mariners are discussing a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton, but the Mariners are one of the teams on Upton's no-trade list.

OF | Jason Kubel | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy,
The Baltimore Orioles had talked to the Arizona Diamondbacks about OF Jason Kubel, but the talks didn't go very far because the two teams aren't a great match for a trade. Baltimore continues to turn down teams when they ask for SP Dylan Bundy.

OF | Scott Hairston | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees, along with the New York Mets, remain interested in signing free-agent OF Scott Hairston (Mets), but the Yanks are pessimistic, thinking Hairston prefers to sign with another team in order to gain more consistent at-bats.

OF | Curtis Granderson | New York Yankees | Fantasy
The New York Yankees are interested in trading for Washington Nationals OF Mike Morse, according to sources. Morse is available on the trading block after Washington re-signed 1B Adam LaRoche. Morse could be a right-handed stick to complement OFs Curtis Granderson, Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki, and he can also serve as the designated hitter.

OF | Ben Francisco | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Mets are interested in signing free-agent OF Ben Francisco (Rays).

OF | Grady Sizemore | free agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Mets and New York Yankees have both checked in on free-agent OF Grady Sizemore (knee), but he's telling teams he will suspend contract talks until he is closer to 100 percent health. Sizemore's agent, Joe Urbon, doesn't have a timetable for when his client will be fully healthy, but he thinks it'll be closer to midseason than opening day.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Charlie Morton | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Charlie Morton (elbow) has been rehabbing at Pirate City after having Tommy John surgery last summer. He's throwing long-toss a progression from 60 to 90 to 120 feet, 75 total throws per day and last week started throwing on back-to-back days. Morton said he is on track to start throwing off the mound in late January or early February, and he expects to rejoin the Pirates this summer, probably about midway through the season.

SP | Rick Porcello | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
The Detroit Tigers are discussing a potential trade with the Chicago Cubs for SP Rick Porcello, but the Tigers are trying to get the Baltimore Orioles involved as a potential third team, as the Tigers want SS J.J. Hardy. The Tigers do not feel the Cubs have the necessary components to make a deal happen just between the two sides.

SP | Francisco Liriano | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) injured his non-throwing (right) arm around Christmas, and his deal with the team is currently on hold. "We continue to have dialogue with Francisco's (agent), but there is nothing to announce at this time," general manager Neal Huntington said. Pittsburgh was hoping Liriano could serve as the team's No. 3 starter this year.

SP | Carl Pavano | free agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy,
Free-agent SP Carl Pavano (shoulder) has been talking to six teams. His agent, Dave Pepe, said Pavano is healthy and has been playing catch to build strength in his shoulder.

Relief Pitcher

The New York Yankees would likely offer RP Boone Logan to the Washington Nationals in order to acquire OF Mike Morse.
