"His size and speed and his ability inside with his body frame and movement skills is the reason we put him in there," defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said of Clements. St. Louis Rams S Craig Dahl will start at strong safety in place of James Butler (knee) Saturday, Aug. 14, reports Kathleen Nelson, of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Dahl has been working with the first-string defense since Butler, who is expected to miss a few weeks, suffered a sprained MCL.

New York Giants SS Michael Johnson (back) sat out the team's evening practice Thursday, Aug. 12, with back spasms, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News. His injury doesn't sound serious because head coach Tom Coughlin said he was "surprised" that Johnson wasn't out practicing since he looked better in meetings earlier in the day.

Detroit Lions S Louis Delmas (groin) is not going to play during the team's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 14, reports Chris McCosky, of The Detroit News. Delmas is gradually working himself back from a groin injury. He is not expected to take part in afternoon workouts Thursday, Aug. 12, and didn't practice in the morning session.
