2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU

by Cory J. Bonini on April 11, 2013 @ 10:52:56 PDT

LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery may not receive the attention of teammate Barkevious Mingo, but the former has an outside shot at the first round in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Montgomery racked up 37 tackles (13 for loss) and 8.0 sacks as a junior in 2012. He tallied 17.0 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss over the last two years.

Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
Relentless motor

  • Long, lean body (6-foot-3, 262 pounds) with long arms (33 7/8 inches)
  • Explosive lower body (34 1/2-inch vertical)
  • Very good top-end speed (4.78-second 40-yard dash time)
  • Short-area burst (1.61-second 10-yard split)
  • Highly motivated, non-stop motor - never gives up, plays with hustle
  • Strong against the run
  • Sound tackler and big hitter
  • Extremely powerful for his size
  • Upside - needs to refine his game but has the tools to be a multi-faceted player in the NFL
  • Experienced in a pro-style defense

  • Slow off the snap - seems to play the offensive tackle's movements rather than watch the ball
  • Not a natural pass rusher, despite looking the part
  • Lacks an array of pass-rushing and counter moves
  • Isn't naturally flexible coming off the edge
  • Inconsistent use of his hands
  • Struggles to break down in space
  • Needs to improve his recognition of developing plays
  • Tore his right ACL in 2010

Expected draft placement

Montgomery is a hair on the raw side but has enough potential to warrant consideration in the late first round. Chances are, though, that he'll come off the board in the second round. The former Tiger is not expected to fall out of the second day of the NFL Draft.
