Fantasy football players in the news

Quarterback

QB | Joe Flacco | Baltimore Ravens | Fantasy
Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco will be the NFL's highest-paid player at $30 million in 2013, but he'll count just $6.8 million on the salary cap.

QB | Tom Brady | New England Patriots | Fantasy
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said he didn't want to see a situation develop with QB Tom Brady where he played for another team. "I just didn't want to ever see this become like Joe Montana leaving San Francisco, Emmitt Smith leaving Dallas, Brett Favre leaving Green Bay, Peyton Manning leaving Indianapolis. If Tom Brady played out this current contract and left us, there was no doubt in my mind that someone out there would pay him top dollar, and they should, for this ability, his leadership and his unselfishness," Kraft said. Kraft went on to note that he was trying to stay ahead of the curve, but added the team doesn't have the ability to pay a single player 18 to 20 percent of the salary cap.

Kraft said the team and Brady are both taking a chance making this longer-term commitment with the new three-year, $27 million extension. "Hopefully we have an elite quarterback that, even if his skills decline even a little bit, he'll still be better than 90 percent of the quarterbacks in the league," Kraft said.

QB | Tony Romo | Dallas Cowboys | Fantasy
The Dallas Cowboys plan to sign QB Tony Romo, who turns 33 in April, to a contract extension this month that may keep him with the Cowboys for the rest of his career. He has one season left on his contract and counts a team-high $16.8 million against the 2013 salary cap. A long-term extension could cut that cap number in half.

The only talk around the team surrounding the quarterback position is working out a new deal with him. The Cowboys are not looking to replace Romo; instead, they plan to build around him and would like to upgrade their offensive line to give him more time in the pocket and an improved running game.

QB | Kyle Orton | Dallas Cowboys | Free Agents, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Dallas Cowboys are happy with their quarterback pair of Tony Romo and backup Kyle Orton. The team is not expected to add a third-string quarterback or even look at the position during the free-agent market. Developing a long-term starting option at the quarterback position isn't a need right now so it likely will not take on a sense of urgency until future seasons.

QB | David Garrard | Free Agent | Free Agents
The New York Jets and free-agent QB David Garrard (Dolphins) have kept open the lines of communication, but no deal is imminent, one source said Sunday, March 3. If a deal gets done, it wouldn't happen for at least another week.

QB | Matt Cassel | Kansas City Chiefs | Free Agents
The Cleveland Browns may show interest in Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Matt Moore this offseason as well as Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel if he is released.

QB | Matt Moore | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Cleveland Browns may show interest in Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Matt Moore this offseason as well as Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel if he is released.

QB | Derek Anderson | Free Agent | Free Agents
Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski could try to talk Carolina Panthers impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson into signing with the Browns to compete for the starting job but it could be difficult because of Anderson's history with Cleveland.

Running Back

RB | Felix Jones | Free Agent | Free Agents
It seems like it has been a foregone conclusion, but the Dallas Cowboys are unlikely to bring back impending free-agent RB Felix Jones. The team is looking for durable players at the running back position, and Jones has been anything but durable during his Cowboys career.

RB | Bilal Powell | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets RB Bilal Powell is expected to receive a bigger role next season because he showed enough on the field to earn more time.

RB | Lamar Miller | Miami Dolphins | Fantasy
The Miami Dolphins are not considering having RB Daniel Thomas compete with RB Lamar Miller for the starting running back job next season and are not expected to sign a veteran running back to compete with Miller. The team likes Miller's ability to make jump-cut moves, which allows him to get to the second level in the team's zone-blocking scheme.

Wide Receiver

WR | Danny Amendola | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
There is a rumor the St. Louis Rams are considering using the transition tag on WR Danny Amendola as a tight end. That tag is worth $5.194 million.

WR | Wes Welker | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New England Patriots aren't expected to place the franchise tag on free-agent WR Wes Welker.

WR | Greg Jennings | Free Agent | Transaction, Draft, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Green Bay Packers are still mulling using the franchise tag on impending free-agent WR Greg Jennings before the deadline to use the tag Monday, March 4. General manager Ted Thompson said at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team would like to retain Jennings.

WR | Kevin Ogletree | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Impending free-agent WR Kevin Ogletree (Cowboys) might not return to the Dallas Cowboys. As the season progressed, Ogletree's playing time dwindled, and he might be on the move in free agency.

WR | Terrance Williams | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Baylor WR Terrance Williams is considered more of a project by one scout heading into the NFL Draft. "He has some ability, and his speed is deceptive. He's just not ready. He needs a lot of work," the NFL scout said Sunday, March 3. "If you're a team that can wait, he may turn in to something pretty good."

WR | Quinton Patton | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Louisiana Tech WR Quinton Patton is not viewed as an impact player by one scout heading into the NFL Draft. "I'm not a big fan. He's just a guy. The best he's doing to be is a No. 3 (for teams), if that," the scout said Sunday, March 3.

WR | DeAndre Hopkins | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Clemson WR DeAndre Hopkins is considered a "classic possession receiver" by one NFL scout, but the scout calls Hopkins' speed into question. "He's just not fast enough," the scout said Sunday, March 3. Hopkins posted a time of 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

WR | Tavon Austin | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
One NFL scout compared West Virginia WR Tavon Austin to Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, although there is a big difference. "The difference is (the Eagles) use DeSean deep. With this kid, they throw him short stuff and let him go," the scout said Sunday, March 3. "Again, he's perfect as a slot guy to get away from press (coverage). He'll probably go first round (in the NFL Draft), but in my opinion, he's a second-round pick."

WR | Cordarrelle Patterson | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson is considered an "explosive" and "dynamic" receiver, but his intelligence was questioned by one NFL scout. "He runs consistent 4.4s (in the 40-yard dash). I'm just not sure how smart he is," the NFL scout said Sunday, March 3. "You're going to have to keep it simple for him. But the kid is really dynamic."

Tight End

TE | Dustin Keller | Free Agent | Free Agents
The New York Jets aren't expected to place the franchise tag on free-agent TE Dustin Keller.

TE | Zach Ertz | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Stanford TE Zach Ertz might hear his name called near the end of the first round in the NFL Draft. However, he is basically considered a wide receiver due to his poor blocking ability according to one NFL scout. "I guess it depends on the team," a scout said Sunday, March 3. "To me, he's a big, possession wide receiver. That's what he is. You put him out there, and it's like having three wide receivers on the field. He can't block at all. He has just average speed for the position, but he does run great routes, and there is something to be said for that."

TE | Tyler Eifert | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert saw his numbers slip last year with the Fighting Irish, as they were more of a run-first offense. He had just 50 receptions for 685 yards and four touchdowns, but that didn't bother one NFL scout. "He'll probably go somewhere in the middle of the first round (of the NFL Draft), somewhere in the teens," the scout said Sunday, March 3. "And somebody is going to get a real good player there." Eifert is considered by some the best tight end coming into the draft since San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis was selected No. 6 overall in 2006.

Place Kicker

PK | Billy Cundiff | Free Agent | Transaction
The Baltimore Ravens have $1.8 million in deal money for former PK Billy Cundiff counting against the salary cap in 2013.

Guard

OG | Mackenzy Bernadeau | Dallas Cowboys | Transaction
The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contracts of several players during the offseason. The team has OGs Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings, CB Orlando Scandrick and DT Jay Ratliff as options to restructure their deals if the team requires further cap space in 2013.

OG | Derrick Dockery | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Dallas Cowboys are unlikely to bring back impending free-agent OG Derrick Dockery, as they look to get younger along the offensive line.

Defensive Line

DL | Randy Starks | Miami Dolphins | Free Agents
Updating an earlier report, the Miami Dolphins placed the franchise tag on DT Randy Starks, which guarantees him $8.45 million.

DL | Jay Ratliff | Dallas Cowboys | Transaction
The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contracts of several players during the offseason. The team has OGs Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings, CB Orlando Scandrick and DT Jay Ratliff as options to restructure their deals if the team requires further cap space in 2013.

DL | Kenyon Coleman | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Dallas Cowboys plan to get younger, especially along the defensive line, and the injury history of impending free-agent DE Kenyon Coleman, and age, likely means he will not be brought back.

DL | William Hayes | Free Agent | Free Agents
The St. Louis Rams are interested in re-signing impending free-agent DE William Hayes (Rams), and the interest is mutual. He had a strong performance last season on a one-year contract, and likely earned himself more money as a result. He made friends with his line mates and openly acknowledged how much he enjoyed his first season with the Rams.

Defensive End

DE | Ezekiel Ansah | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
The Cleveland Browns are expected to consider taking Oregon DE Dion Jordan or Brigham Young DE Ezekiel Ansah in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft if they are available when they pick.

DE | Dion Jordan | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft

Linebacker

LB | Quincy Black | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may opt to release LB Quincy Black (neck/shoulder) and his $5.5 million 2013 salary. His football future is in doubt due to nerve damage in his neck and shoulder and the team may want to spend the money on a more certain option. Should Black be released, he becomes eligible for a $1 million insurance payout. He'd then be eligible for another $500,000 insurance payout in 2014 should he not be able to return to the field by then.

LB | Anthony Spencer | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Dallas Cowboys have until Monday, March 4, to use their franchise tag on impending free-agent LB Anthony Spencer, or anyone else. It appears doubtful they will use the tag on Spencer, meaning the odds of him playing for a new team in 2013 and beyond look better by the day.

LB | Ernie Sims | Free Agent | Free Agents
Impending free-agent LBs Brady Poppinga and Ernie Sims are unlikely to be brought back by the Dallas Cowboys. Poppinga didn't make enough plays, and Sims doesn't fit the apparent youth movement in Dallas.

LB | Dannell Ellerbe | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Baltimore Ravens would like to re-sign impending free-agent LB Dannell Ellerbe (Ravens). Vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty met with Ellerbe's agent at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the agent characterized the preliminary talks as positive and productive.

LB | Kaluka Maiava | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Cleveland Browns could be interested in re-signing impending free-agent LB Kaluka Maiava this offseason. The team does not consider Maiava a starter but he could be a special teams player.

LB | Jarvis Jones | NFL Draft Prospect | Injury, Draft
University of Georgia LB Jarvis Jones (neck) said there have not been any teams that have taken him off their draft boards because of the spinal stenosis he dealt with at Southern California. "People are still talking to me. Nobody has taken me off the board. The doctor said I was fine and cleared me and the [scouting] combine went fine for me. I was cleared medically. Teams know my situation. Everything went great. I did everything they asked me to do. I'll have my pro day [at Georgia on March 21], and then I'm going to meet with a whole lot of teams," Jones said.

Cornerback

CB | William Gay | Pittsburgh Steelers | Transaction, Free Agents
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed free-agent CB William Gay (Cardinals) to an undisclosed deal.

CB | Omar Bolden | Denver Broncos | Depth Chart Tidbit
The Denver Broncos are looking for CB Omar Bolden to compete for more playing time in 2013. The team would like him to play his way into a role in their nickel and dime defensive packages.

CB | Orlando Scandrick | Dallas Cowboys | Transaction
The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contracts of several players during the offseason. The team has OGs Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings, CB Orlando Scandrick and DT Jay Ratliff as options to restructure their deals if the team requires further cap space in 2013.

CB | Mike Jenkins | Free Agent | Injury, Free Agents
Impending free-agent CB Mike Jenkins (Cowboys) (shoulder) is unlikely to re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys, as he felt disrespected by the team last season while he recovered from shoulder surgery.

CB | Michael Coe | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Dallas Cowboys are unlikely to bring back impending free-agent CB Michael Coe (Cowboys).

CB | Dunta Robinson | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may show interest in free-agent CB Dunta Robinson (Falcons) this offseason.

CB | Cary Williams | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Indianapolis Colts may show interest in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent CB Cary Williams and FS Ed Reed this offseason because head coach Chuck Pagano coached both when he was with the Ravens.

Strong Safety

SS | Dashon Goldson | Free Agent | Free Agents
The San Francisco 49ers aren't expected to place the franchise tag on free-agent FS Dashon Goldson.

Free Safety

FS | Ronde Barber | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Depth Chart Tidbit
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and veteran S Ronde Barber are likely to meet soon to figure out the direction both parties would like to go in 2013. Barber could opt to retire or play his 17th season. If Barber would like to return, the team still feels he has plenty of value in leadership, skill and exemplary work ethic. However, at 38 years old, there is some fear he may be hitting the wall soon and the team selected Mark Barron in the first-round last year to play the role of the attacking safety working inside the tackle box. Should Barber be willing to accept a lesser role, it's like that he would return to the Buccaneers once again. If not, he may be willing to look to play for another team or, as noted, opt for retirement.

FS | Ed Reed | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Indianapolis Colts may show interest in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent CB Cary Williams and FS Ed Reed this offseason because head coach Chuck Pagano coached both when he was with the Ravens.
