"(It is) stuff that I think will help me get my control back to where I want it to be," Miller said. "I know my last start (on July 10), it was a little off and a little wild. This break also helps me in that sense as well. Getting to throw three side sessions in between starts, you get to work on things, and I'm getting back to more where I need to be."

Miller enters the second half with 104 2/3 innings under his belt. The team hasn't publicly revealed how many innings they'll allow Miller to throw, he said he has his sights set on 180, which would easily surpass his 150 1/3 regular-season innings from a year ago.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly been scouting the Milwaukee Brewers and RP Francisco Rodriguez heavily in recent days and weeks. The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers might have an interest in Rodriguez, and they Brewers could also offer RPs John Axford and Mike Gonzalez.

The San Francisco Giants have placed RP Jeremy Affeldt (groin) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin. Manager Bruce Bochy said he is expected to miss four to six weeks. In a corresponding move, RP Jean Machi has been recalled from Triple-A Fresno.

Colorado Rockies CL Rafael Betancourt (appendix) was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to appendicitis. RP Mitchell Boggs was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. RP Rex Brothers will serve as the closer while Betancourt is out.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Michael Stutes (biceps) has been shut down from throwing after experiencing shoulder soreness. He has undergone an MRI exam and received a cortisone injection but there is no timetable for his return.

RP | Jeremy Horst | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies RP Jeremy Horst (elbow) is expected to miss the remainder of the season after experiencing continued soreness in his left elbow during a rehab stint with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Horst was examined by Dr. James Andrews and may have a flexor-pronator tendon issue. Members of the team's medical staff will monitor him to determine if he can recovery without needing to undergo surgery.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (shoulder) is scheduled to be examined next week in Los Angeles. He has responded poorly to conservative treatment and will likely have to undergo season-ending surgery. Adams could miss the beginning of the 2014 season if surgery is necessary.

RP | Joaquin Benoit | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
The Detroit Tigers have been happy with the production of RP Joaquin Benoit since he took over as closer. He has allowed just one run over 8 1/3 innings since moving into the role, while striking out 15 batters and walking just three. They continue to scout other teams for bullpen help, and Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek was one named bandied about, but it appears any addition would be to bolster the back-end of the bullpen in a setup role, but not for the closer spot.

The Detroit Tigers continue to search the market for bullpen help leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but they reportedly have no interest in New York Yankees RP Joba Chamberlain. The Tigers have scouts watching the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners this weekend, and each of those teams have relievers that will almost certainly be available in a trade.

Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, July 20.

RP | Sean Marshall | Cincinnati Reds | Injury,
Cincinnati Reds RP Sean Marshall (shoulder) was scheduled to throw live batting practice Thursday, July 18, but felt some discomfort in his shoulder while playing long toss. He had his shoulder examined Friday, July 19, and will not pitch this weekend. He could throw Monday, July 22, if his shoulder responds to treatment.

The Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent RPs Jose Contreras (Pirates) and Brandon Lyon (Mets) to minor league contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. Both pitchers have been assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
