He said his hands dropped early on in his career, and he has made adjustments to fix those. He also said he entered this season not worrying if this would be his last chance to be an everyday player. In the past, he said he worried too much about not ruining the opportunity in front of him.

The San Diego Padres are considering having SS Everth Cabrera (hamstring) play three rehab games with Single-A Fort Wayne and activating him off the 15-day disabled list Friday, July 5. The team initially considered activating Cabrera Thursday, July 4.

"I have one goal every single year, especially a new team I'm with - when I come to an organization, to make sure when I leave that they're better off," Byrd said. Byrd has picked up the pace after a slow start, moving two RBI behind 3B David Wright for the team lead.

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris D. Johnson entered play Wednesday, July 3, leading the team in batting average while ranking second in on-base percentage. However, manager Fredi Gonzalez isn't interested in moving him from the eighth spot of the batting order. "It's been good to have him there," Gonzalez said. "I've been tempted to move him up a couple times. But it seems that hole comes up with people on base all the time, or at the very least you get the other manager thinking about whether you walk him."

Rodriguez said he felt fine, he's just concerned about getting his body in condition for the rest of the season. Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he could use 3B Miguel Cabrera (back) as the designated hitter at some point during their current road trip.

Buck hit .241 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in April but has slowed since and is hitting just .205 with 13 long balls and 39 RBIs on the year. Buck hit .167 in June. Recker is hitting only .182 with three homers and 10 RBIs.

"I think that's the tradeoff with most guys that have that much power," Weiss said. "That's usually more length with their swings, which is why they hit the ball further when they catch it. At the same time, you might miss some pitches too because of the length."

In his last 30 games, Quentin is batting .343 with 12 extra-base hits (including five homers), 11 RBIs and a .433 on-base percentage, raising his clip from .178 to .266 heading into action Wednesday, July 3.

The Milwaukee Brewers have had ongoing discussions with the Arizona Diamondbacks about SP Yovani Gallardo, and RPs John Axford, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez, according to major league sources. The Diamondbacks have a deep farm system, and it is conceivable they could acquire the ace of the Brewers and one of the relievers. The team needs help with several starters injured, and RP Heath Bell subbing for the shaky RP J.J. Putz at closer.

RP | Carlos Marmol | Los Angeles Dodgers | Fantasy,
The Los Angeles Dodgers are sending RP Carlos Marmol to the minors in hopes that they can fix a delivery issue. A source said Marmol "agreed to work with them" and go to the minors as a condition of the trade with the Chicago Cubs. Marmol has more than six years of major league service time and thus has the right to decline an outright minor league assignment. He apparently will waive that right if he clears waivers this week. The Cubs have agreed to pay nearly $2 million of his remaining $4.8 million salary this year. The Cubs also took on all of the $2.375 million still owed to RP Matt Guerrier, who was acquired in the deal from the Dodgers.
