"We want to give him sporadic days off," Wedge said. "But yeah, it's because there's a lefty on the mound. It's not that I won't play him against lefties. He was the odd man out today."

The biggest thing for me is I just want it to be a one-day thing and not try to fight through it, and all of the sudden, do something a little more serious."

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) is still sore and fatigued after undergoing an appendectomy last week. His voice sounds week and he's not back on a regular sleep pattern. "It's easier to get up and down right now from the sitting-down position," Heyward said. "But after that, my body is still sensitive in the abdominal area. There's a feeling that I could pull something. Not that I will. But that is just the feeling if I try to do something too quick." He won't be allowed to do strenuous activity for at least another week, and he will gradually resume baseball activities once he feels better.

Texas Rangers OF David Murphy is hitting only .176 entering Monday, April 29, but he's only been a career .228 hitter in the first month of the season. He's never had more than two home runs in April. The strange thing is that he's hitting 57 points worse against right-handed pitchers than lefties. Murphy has 15 strikeouts in 91 at-bats and has just six walks.

Bourjos said opposing pitchers and the team's lineup are reasons he has not been running. "All the pitchers have been really quick to the plate, and you don't want to run into an out with Trout, [1B Albert Pujols], [OF Josh Hamilton] and [OF Mark Trumbo] hitting behind you," Bourjos said. "You want to be smart about it. You don't want to force the issue."

He gave up only one run and five hits while walking two in six innings. Lackey admitted he felt "a little bit of something" in his biceps during the outings but feels that his problems will go away once he regains full arm strength, a process he thinks will take around four or five starts. "He's in a good place right now and there were no physical issues today. He came out of today fine. He does give us a seasoned veteran and a very good pitcher in that spot in the rotation," manager John Farrell said.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) said he felt fine after throwing for the second straight day Sunday, April 28. "I woke up this morning and didn't take a step back," Motte said Sunday. "It felt good. If it didn't feel good I don't think we'd have moved forward." The Cardinals said earlier this month that if Motte hadn't improved by the beginning of May he would likely have season-ending reconstructive surgery. Motte plans to play catch again Monday, April 29, unless he had a setback. "If it's June and I'm not chucking, we need to do something," Motte said.
