Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard will take the day off Friday, March 8, ending a streak of playing in 12 straight spring games. Howard is hitting .364 (12-for-33) with six extra-base hits. "We want him healthy, but at the same time we're not trying to kill him down here. We ain't gonna kill him. Hard work never hurt nobody. He'll be in shape but I'll start monitoring him more. He will get some time off," manager Charlie Manuel said.

1B | Mark Teixeira | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) said he will be cautious and won't rush back from his injury. "Just an overuse injury that I just have to let heal. It is not one of those things I can play through. I can't play at 70 or 80 percent because then you have the opportunity of completely tearing it and then you will need surgery," Teixeira said.

Second Baseman

2B | Daniel Murphy | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) is close to returning to games and should face live pitching Friday, March 8. OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (knee) ran on an underwater treadmill Thursday, March 7. "His flexibility is getting better," manager Terry Collins said of Nieuwenhuis. "The swelling is gone down."

2B | Justin Turner | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets 2B Justin Turner played in the outfield Thursday, March 7, for the first time in seven years, playing two innings in left field before moving to first base. Manager Terry Collins said he might be inclined to use Turner in the outfield as part of a double switch late in games.

2B | Danny Espinosa | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa (shoulder) said he's feeling great after being bothered by a torn left rotator cuff last year. "The shoulder feels unbelievable. I'm not having any problems. My strength is exactly where I want it to be. It's getting stronger because I've continued to stay on top of things. ... I feel awesome," Espinosa said. He also said he has a more direct swing path to the ball this spring because his swing has been shortened. Espinosa said he's more focused on hitting the ball up the middle and the other way, too.

SS | Troy Tulowitzki | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Contrary to previous reports, the St. Louis Cardinals haven't called about Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki. The Rockies have no interest in trading him, anyway.

SS | Rafael Furcal | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal (elbow) expects to have the bone spur in his elbow removed at the same time he undergoes Tommy John surgery. Furcal thinks he'll have the operation at some point next week. St. Louis will go with either SSs Pete Kozma or Ronny Cedeno at shortstop with Furcal out for the season. "The way we look at it right now it is certainly going to be a competition between Kozma and Cedeno but there's no doubt that given what Kozma did for us in the last six weeks of the season last year that we so have a high level on confidence that he can continue to do that," general manager John Mozeliak said.

Third Baseman

3B | David Freese | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 3B David Freese (tailbone) and 1B Allen Craig (shoulder) returned to the lineup Friday, March 8. Freese is the DH.

3B | Scott Sizemore | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics 3B Scott Sizemore (hand) returned to the lineup Thursday, March 7, after being bothered by a bruised hand. 2B Jemile Weeks (shoulder) should return soon from his bruised right shoulder. Hitting right-handed and throwing have given Weeks the most trouble due to his shoulder pain. Along with these two, SS Jed Lowrie is also in the competition for the second base job.

3B | Mike Olt | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 3B Mike Olt (tooth) will sit out another day Thursday, March 7, after having his wisdom tooth pulled out.

3B | Brett Lawrie | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie (intercostal) has a mild strain near his 10th rib and left intercostal muscle that will likely keep him out for two to three weeks. He's expected to be ready for opening day, but 2B Emilio Bonifacio would likely step in at third base if Lawrie isn't ready.

C | Victor Martinez | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) said he's doing so well that he doesn't even think about his knee anymore.

C | Hank Conger | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Hank Conger has been bothered by throwing woes in spring training; he has sailed two throws to the bases, bounced a throw and almost hit SP Jered Weaver on a throw to second base this week. He needs to find a consistent arm slot with his throws in order to be considered a viable backup to C Chris Iannetta this year. "There's a level you need to where teams have to work for their stolen bases," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Hank has the ability to get to that level, no doubt. Right now, he's not, but it's still early in the spring, and we're very confident he'll find that release point to do what he needs to do."

C | Taylor Teagarden | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles C Taylor Teagarden (back) took batting practice and did fielding drills Thursday, March 7.

OF | Justin Ruggiano | Miami Marlins | Injury, Fantasy
The Miami Marlins' center field job is wide open, with OFs Justin Ruggiano (back) and Chris Coghlan competing for the spot. Ruggiano is hoping to make his spring debut Saturday, March 9, after being bothered by a tight lower back. Coghlan is 6-for-20 (.300) with a double and two RBIs in his seven spring games. "We're going to run him out in center. We haven't had anybody stand out yet, so there's still an opportunity for somebody to take that job. Right now, he's swinging the bat and doing everything he can possibly do," manager Mike Redmond said of Coghlan. OFs Gorkys Hernandez, Bryan Petersen and Kevin Mattison are secondary options. Hernandez is out of minor league options, however, and Coghlan has one option left. OFs Jake Marisnick and Christian Yelich will open with Double-A Jacksonville.

OF | Michael Brantley | Cleveland Indians | Injury, Fantasy
Cleveland Indians OF Michael Brantley (forearm) had the stitches removed from his forearm Thursday, March 7, and he might play in a game Sunday, March 10, as the team is being cautious. "We'll let him probably go a couple days," manager Terry Francona said, "where he does everything on the field, running the bases, taking balls off the bat, and then maybe Sunday we'll get him in a game. Maybe we'll start him for three or four innings. I think that's probably pretty reasonable."

OF | Darin Mastroianni | Minnesota Twins | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Twins OF Darin Mastroianni (hamstring) said he has been cleared to return to spring action, but it's unknown when he'll return to the lineup.

OF | Matt Den Dekker | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Matt Den Dekker has shown that he has legitimate big league power abilities, but he needs to show the team that he can make more contact if he wants to be on the major league roster. He struck out 154 times in 533 at-bats in the minors last year, which was the most by a minor leaguer with the team all year and 21st most in the minors last year. "One of the things we're working with Matt hard on is a two-strike approach - cut the strikeouts back so he makes better contact, because he's got such good legs that if he puts the ball in play, he's got a chance to get on base and score runs," manager Terry Collins said.

OF | Craig Gentry | Texas Rangers | Fantasy
Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington plans to take OF Leonys Martin under his wing this year, meaning the team will keep a close eye on his development, and coach Gary Pettis will work closely with Martin on his defense in the outfield. Martin could be in a center field platoon with OF Craig Gentry.

OF | Matt Holliday | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (illness) is out for a couple of days due to an illness.

He headed to the bullpen after and finished the day throwing 60 pitches. "I felt good," Jimenez said. "I was able to attack the strike zone and I threw all my pitches for strikes. "Being so early, third time out, it felt good," Pomeranz said. "That's what I struggled with in years past, trying to find the right delivery and the right feeling. I definitely felt that feeling, that I had the delivery that I'm supposed to have, that I had a few years ago when I felt real good."

SP | Matt Harvey | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets SP Matt Harvey tossed 4 1/3 no-hit innings in his spring outing Thursday, March 7, and he threw 35 of his 48 pitches for strikes. He struck out five batters. "He's on a mission to be real good. When you bring something up to him, he applies himself. He's in tremendous shape. He was only going to go about five more pitches anyway, but he told me afterward, 'I had 50 left in me,'" manager Terry Collins said. Harvey was throwing across his body in his last outing, but he was much more efficient Thursday after making a fix.

SP | Phillippe Aumont | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee said the bullpen competition is about to heat up. SP | Jason Hammel | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy,

SP | Philip Humber | Houston Astros | Fantasy,
Houston Astros SP Philip Humber showed impeccable control of his fastball by tossing four strong innings Thursday, March 7. "I threw my fastball where I wanted to throw it," he said. "I threw four-seamers, two-seamers, and I think that helped things a little bit."

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb used a cut fastball for the first time in his spring outing Thursday, March 7, and said everything felt good.

SP | Cliff Lee | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee allowed two solo home runs Thursday, March 7, and he said he might be prone to giving up more home runs than other pitchers because he's constantly around the strike zone. "That comes along with throwing a lot of strikes usually," Lee said. "And that's what I'm trying to do. Occasionally, they'll be swing mode and run into a pitch if I leave it over the plate. That's what happens. I just have to make sure I do a better job of keeping the ball down, especially if I sense they are in swing mode." Only Oakland Athletics SP Bartolo Colon threw more strikes than Lee last season. Lee's 11.8 home run per fly ball rate last year was the highest mark for him in the last four years.

His cutter is coming out of his hand like his fastball with late-breaking movement. He gave up a hit in a scoreless inning Thursday, March 7, and three of his five cutters were thrown for strikes. "Last year, it was getting hard for me because they knew the fastball was coming, and I'd throw the fastball. Now, they're going to think the fastball is coming and I'll throw the cutter. ... Got 'em," Frieri said. He is confident about taking these two new pitches into the regular season.

RP | Robbie Ross | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Randy Wells is still in the discussion with RP Robbie Ross for the team's No. 5 starting spot, and Wells easily has the most experience of the candidates. Wells has allowed only one earned run despite allowing nine baserunners in four innings in his first two spring starts. "The last time out he didn't have his changeup, and that is his weapon," manager Ron Washington said. "If he has that, he should get through his four innings with no problem."

RP | Casey Janssen | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (shoulder) felt fine after his last bullpen session. RP Sergio Santos (triceps) was held back from playing catch Thursday, March 7, but he's expected to tomorrow. Santos could pitch in a spring game Tuesday, March 12.
