1B | C.J. Cron | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury

1B | Adam Lind | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said the team will keep a close eye on how 1B Adam Lind fares against left-handed pitching this spring, and they're currently debating whether they think he can be an everyday player. "We're looking at it," Gibbons said. "That's what we want to (evaluate), because we have some right-handed bats that could fill that hole if we're stronger that way." Lind hit .202 against lefties last year and hits .220 against them in his career. Gibbons downplayed the possibility that OF Colby Rasmus could be involved in a platoon at first base. INF Emilio Bonifacio and OF Rajai Davis are intriguing options off the bench against righties.

1B | Yonder Alonso | San Diego Padres | Fantasy
San Diego Padres 1B Yonder Alonso made changes to his stance this offseason with the help of hitting coach Phil Plantier, balancing his body and putting more of his legs and torso into his swing, which he hopes will add more power. "To me, the changes are dramatic," Alonso said. "When Plantier and I started working, I opened myself up to any ideas. I want to add some power to my swing. What he did was make me more balanced at the plate so I could move quicker to the ball. We changed my swing a lot and worked on my lower body." Knee surgery affected Alonso's lower half before the start of last season.

1B | Lars Anderson | Chicago White Sox | Transaction
The Chicago White Sox acquired 3B Conor Gillaspie from the San Francisco Giants Thursday, Feb. 21. It's unknown what the Giants received in return. In a corresponding move, the team designated 1B Lars Anderson for assignment.

2B | Ian Kinsler | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler (ankle) said the sprained right ankle that bothered him since 2010 is no longer a problem. "I'm definitely past that. I haven't had many attempted stolen bases in spring training lately because of that, but it's something I want to practice this spring and get a feel for it. I made an attempt off (Evan) Meek in the intrasquad game, and I felt great. I talk about cheating, there was zero of that. Cheating is over-anticipating. This was read and go." He said his ankle wasn't the reason for his drop in production across the board last year, though.

SS | Derek Jeter | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter (ankle) will make his spring debut by March 10, which would give him at least 19 spring games to be ready for the season.

SS | Hanley Ramirez | Los Angeles Dodgers | Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez is expected to start at shortstop in the Cactus League spring opener Saturday, Feb. 23. He moves back to his regular position after playing third basefor most of last season. Third base coach Tim Wallach has been impressed with Ramirez's work habits early in spring. "He's been working really hard," Wallach said Friday, Feb. 22. "I'm very happy with the way he handles his business, who he is, how he approaches things."

SS | Cesar Izturis | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds INF Cesar Izturis is taking groundballs at third base and shortstop in spring camp, and he'll be a regular backup to SS Zack Cozart at short. Izturis will make $800,000 this year if he is in the majors and can be released June 1 if he's not on the big league roster.

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said 3B Conor Gillaspie will compete for a spot at third base this spring with 3B Brent Morel. 3B Jeff Keppinger (shoulder) is the front-runner at the hot corner, but the team may prefer to move him across the infield. Keppinger will sit out the spring opener Saturday, Feb. 23, partly because of soreness in his right shoulder. His arm isn't up to normal strength because he didn't throw much in the offseason after he was recovering from a broken right fibula. Morel looks completely healthy this spring and has impressed Ventura, but Gillaspie could easily break camp with the team as a bench option.

3B | Ian Stewart | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum reiterated that third base is 3B Ian Stewart's (quadriceps) job to win this year, not to lose. However, INF Luis Valbuena, who hit a two-run home run in the intrasquad game Friday, Feb. 22, could create some valid competition, depending on how much time Stewart misses due to injury. "The guy had good winter ball, and obviously put a good swing on a ball today," Sveum said about Valbuena. "I'm not too concerned about Valbuena. I need to see him everywhere. If things work out that way, then yeah, he'll be playing third base quite a bit. First half of spring you'll see him a lot more at other positions."

3B | Ryan Zimmerman | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) took batting practice on the field Friday, Feb. 22. "I don't obviously just jump out there and go right into it, but it feels good," Zimmerman said. "No surprises. Just got to continue getting the throwing going, and as soon as that's ready, obviously the hitting will be ready before that." He is now up to throwing from 90 feet and is putting more oomph on the ball lately. The team will keep Zimmerman from fielding the first two weeks of spring, and he's set to serve as the designated hitter for a few starts.

3B | Will Middlebrooks | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks wants to have discipline in his approach at the plate, but he admits that he won't tone down his aggressiveness with the lumber. "I want to have discipline in my approach," he said. "But if I see four pitches in a game and get three hits, what is wrong with that? If I stick with my approach and get the pitch I was looking for and I did what I was supposed to, that is what counts." Middlebrooks hit only .179 on changeups last year and pitches down the middle, especially fastballs, were problems for him. He had much success against pitches inside and up. He saw 77 pitches right over the plate and had only six hits. He plans to work on pitches down and away this spring, either to lay off them or tailor his swing to cover the whole plate. Hitting coach Greg Colbrunn is working with Middlebrooks on how pitchers have been attacking him.

The Miami Marlins are searching for a backup catcher, following an injury to C Jeff Mathis (collarbone) that is expected to sideline him for six weeks. C Kyle Skipworth would be the most likely choice to serve as the backup to C Rob Brantly if the Marlins decide to use an internal candidate.

C | Luke Montz | Oakland Athletics | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said C Luke Montz would be the team's likely third catcher if anything happened to John Jaso or Derek Norris.

C | Hector Sanchez | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy

C | Ramon Hernandez | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Colorado Rockies C Ramon Hernandez said Friday, Feb. 22, he isn't bothered by persistent trade rumors. This week, a report came out that he might be dealt to help improve the team's pitching. "Thinking about it is too much of a distraction. If it happens, it's business," Hernandez said. "But I want to stay here. Rumors get you kind of crazy."

C | Wilson Ramos | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Doctors advised Washington Nationals C Wilson Ramos (knee) not to play in the spring game Sunday, Feb. 24, because they want to see him sliding into bases before he plays in a game. "He needs to get his at-bats. Missing half a season and no winter ball, I want to get that out of the way as early as possible," manager Davey Johnson said about Ramos. "It may take a week to 10 days for him. If a guy is running well, squatting well and doing all the things from a baseball standpoint, that's what I grade on. I'm the most critical. I never want to run a guy out there that is an injury risk."

OF | Alex Rios | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
Chicago White Sox OF Alex Rios is expected to hit third this season. DH Adam Dunn hit third last season, but he has always been distracted by movement on the bases when he hits. So, he'll likely hit fifth, since OF Alejandro De Aza will hit leadoff and look to steal bases.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond said there are other options in case Ruggiano is out for a while. "Bryan Petersen, Chris Coghlan, those guys can also go in there," Redmond said. "We'll mix guys in, Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. I'm going to get them in some games, too. I'd like to see them play. We got some other guys: Kevin Mattison. We'll try to mix guys in and out as much as we possibly can and see how it all shakes out."

OF | Wil Myers | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy
The Tampa Bay Rays coaching staff doesn't intend to mess with OF Wil Myers' development much, aside from emphasizing the fundamentals and making sure he's unafraid to make mistakes as he tries to enter the big leagues. "Trust the process," executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "If guys are able to do that, because of their natural ability, we're really confident that the outcome will be good." Myers is expected to begin the year at Triple-A Durham.

OF | Peter Bourjos | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy

I knew I was going to throw a good 'pen. But the biggest thing is how it feels in the days to come." SP | Derek Holland | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland is hoping to be able to finish off hitters better after allowing three hits to hitters with two strikes on them Friday, Feb. 22. "I felt good," Holland said. "The main objective was to go out there and execute my pitches. I threw all my pitches for a strike -- ahead in the count and behind in the count. The only thing is I gave up two two-strike hits." He had a .185 opponent average when ahead 0-2 in the count last season.

SP | Hector Noesi | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy,
Seattle Mariners SP Hector Noesi allowed six total runs (four earned) in his spring debut against the San Diego Padres Friday, Feb. 22, in which 3B Jedd Gyorko blasted a grand slam. The Minnesota Twins are starting to believe that SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) will be a real asset to their rotation this year. He will start a spring game against the Toronto Blue Jays, and last week he hit the 10-month milestone of his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Pelfrey hasn't been limited in any way this spring and hasn't suffered any setbacks in his recovery. "You know what," pitching coach Rick Anderson said. "You don't even know he's been hurt." The Twins are raving about Pelfrey's progress and hope he can be the leader of a young rotation.

SP | Brandon Morrow | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
Although Toronto Blue Jays SP Brandon Morrow had career lows in strikeouts per nine innings and fastball velocity last year, he made gains in ERA, hits per nine, walks per nine, WHIP and ground-ball percentage, making him a much more efficient pitcher in the process. "The rise in command (and drop in velocity) comes from not really taking anything off, but just being more in control through my delivery," Morrow said. His curveball also became much sharper and his changeup went back to dominant form. Morrow threw his change 12.1 percent of the time last year, up nearly six percent. As a result, the number of sliders he threw fell five percent to 21.3. He also used his fastball a bit less, while his curve remained steady. Morrow abandoned his previous changeup grip last year in favor of a grip similar to the splitter he threw in college and early in his career. "Holding it like a splitter keeps me from trying to make it too nasty, that way when I think changeup, I try to throw it for strikes, I'm not trying to throw it as a swing and miss pitch, really," said Morrow. "Toward the end of the season, there were times where I was getting pretty good with it and we did use it as a swing and miss pitch, but I want them to make contact with that." The differences in velocities on his various pitches will keep hitters off balance; his curve is around 78 mph and his heater sits around 95 mph.

"Like I said before, I've never taken performance-enhancing drugs and I never will," Gonzalez said. "Two days after the story broke, I was tested for blood and urine, and both came out negative, like I expected. Throughout my entire career, it's been like that. I look forward to handling this with MLB and putting this behind me and looking forward to the season." However, the league hasn't completely absolved Gonzalez and they don't require a positive drug test to suspend a player.

SP | Barry Zito | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito will start the team's home opener this year against the St. Louis Cardinals April 5. Opening day SP Matt Cain will be followed in the rotation by SPs Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum. SP Ryan Vogelsong will follow Zito as the fifth starter.

SP | Zack Wheeler | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets SPs Jenrry Mejia, Zack Wheeler and Jeremy Hefner have a shot to be a part of the opening day rotation if SP Johan Santana isn't ready to go. General manager Sandy Alderson said it's still a possibility that Santana could open the season on the disabled list.

SP | Carlos Carrasco | Cleveland Indians | Injury, Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco (elbow) is in the running to win a rotation spot this spring, but he's unlikely to enter the season in the rotation, especially since he'll have to serve a six-game suspension. The Tribe opens the season with 13 straight games before their first off day, meaning it would require two complete turns through the five-man rotation plus three more starts if there are no postponements. Carrasco also has an option left, so he could start the season with Triple-A Columbus.

SP | Chris Sale | Chicago White Sox | Transaction
The Chicago White Sox signed Ps Dylan Axelrod, Simon Castro, Deunte Heath, Nathan Jones, Charlie Leesman, Jhan Marinez, Nestor Molina, Brian Omogrosso, Jose Quintana, Addison Reed, Adriene Rienzo, Santos Rodriguez, Chris Sale, Hector Santiago, Leyson Septimo and Donnie Veal; Cs Tyler Flowers, Hector Gimenez and Josh Phegley; INFs Brent Morel and Angel Sanchez; and OFs Jordan Danks, Jared Mitchell, Blake Tekotte and Dayan Viciedo to one-year deals.

RP | Rafael Soriano | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy,
Teammates of Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (back) claim that he was dealing with terrible pain in his back during the playoff series in which he blew a late lead against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 that ended the team's season. Storen reportedly spent much of those last three days of the season in the trainer's room receiving treatment for back spasms. General manager Mike Rizzo said he "didn't want to talk about" Storen's condition in Game 5. Rizzo also said Storen's blowup in that game wasn't the reason they went out and signed RP Rafael Soriano. "He was having real bad back spasms. That was the third day (pitching) in a row," OF Jayson Werth said. "He was banged up, man. No one knew. For him to just have the balls to go out there, that says a lot about him."

RP | Jonathan Papelbon | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon admits he didn't do a good job of serving as a leader for the team and bullpen last year, and he plans to change that in 2013. "I put myself in that category," Papelbon said. "I don't feel like I took a certain leadership as much as I could have with the guys in the bullpen. And I intend to make that change this year. I hope that other guys on this team feel the same way as I do."
