Second Baseman

2B | David Adams | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 2B David Adams (ankle, back) will be behind schedule when position players report to camp Sunday, Feb. 17, due to a back injury. He missed most of two seasons with a persistent ankle injury, too. "He's rehabbing currently some back issues," general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday, Feb. 13. "So he'll start behind in big league camp."

2B | Danny Espinosa | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson is happy with the way 2B Danny Espinosa (shoulder) rehabbed his shoulder this offseason, but the team will take it slow with him this spring. "He feels he did enough to exercise around the shoulder. It's not going to be a problem. He has been swinging a lot. He feels great," Johnson said about Espinosa. "(Hitting coach) Rick Eckstein said he really likes the way he has been swinging (the bat) and I don't think that is a problem."

2B | Elliot Johnson | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy
Kansas City Royals SS Elliot Johnson is expected to see work in the outfield this spring. "We're going to do a lot of stuff," manager Ned Yost said. "(Miguel) Tejada is going to play third, second, short and first. (Irving) Falu is going to play some outfield. (Xavier) Nady is going to play some outfield and some third and first in spring training." Johnson has played only 21 1/3 innings in the outfield in his career.

2B | Bill Hall | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim INF Bill Hall, who will be competing with INFs Andrew Romine, Luis Rodriguez, Brendan Harris and Tommy Field for a backup infield job this spring, shed roughly 20 pounds in the offseason in order to become more agile and receive more looks at shortstop. However, the team sees him as more of a backup at second base, third base or the corner outfield spots.

2B | Matt Carpenter | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter, who is working with infielders coach Jose Oquendo to transition to second base, was told to watch New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano and Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips to become a better infielder. "I kind of feel like a kid all over again, because you watch these other big leaguers and you try to be just like them," Carpenter said. "We're watching the unique techniques. Everybody does something different. We practice it all and try to figure out what I'm going to be the best at, and where I'm going to be most comfortable." The Cardinals have been impressed with Carpenter's work over the winter, but 2B Daniel Descalso will enter as the incumbent at the position.

2B | Jose Altuve | Houston Astros | Fantasy
Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said he would prefer to have 2B Jose Altuve hitting second in the batting order this season.

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus arrived to camp early and said he wants to stay with the team long term.

SS | Jamey Carroll | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy

SS | Andrelton Simmons | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy
Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons is expected to hit leadoff this season now that OF Michael Bourn is no longer on the team. Simmons had 106 at-bats in the eighth spot and 41 at-bats while hitting seventh last year. However, he has extensive experience hitting leadoff in the minors, and he said it's not that big of a difference. "I don't have to be more aggressive now, and that's going to be good for me," he said., "Sometimes in the eight-hole, you don't want the pitcher to hit with two outs and the runner on second…. I think it's going to be better. And there will be a bunch of guys hitting behind me who are really good."

SS | Jose Iglesias | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox SS Jose Iglesias reportedly has shortened his swing and is doing a better job of barreling the baseball.

SS | Tyler Pastornicky | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy

"Sometimes when we've got injuries, we get a little desperate to come back quick and we always want a second opinion," Cervelli said. "I went (to Biogenesis). Somebody told me. That's it."

C | Tyler Flowers | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
Chicago White Sox general manager Rich Hahn is comfortable with Cs Tyler Flowers and Hector Gimenez, even though they only have a combined 119 career games under their belts.

C | J.P. Arencibia | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays C J.P. Arencibia caught SP R.A. Dickey's bullpen Wednesday, Feb. 13, and the two are likely to work together for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. "I thought he looked good," manager John Gibbons said of Arencibia. "He's going to go to the WBC with him so he needs to catch him now. Those other guys will get in there, but for right now until they leave, he's going to be the primary guy. In all fairness to him, if he ends up catching him out there, you don't want him naked, I guess you could say."

C | Max Stassi | Houston Astros | Injury
Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said C Max Stassi (oblique) was held out of drills Wednesday, Feb. 13, because the team wants to be careful with his strained oblique. "We want to be more careful than anything," Porter said. "If we had to push him, he could absolutely be pushed at this time, but we're going to take all precautions to make sure that he's ready to go full bore when he steps back out here."

C | Mike Napoli | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox C/1B Mike Napoli (hips) will be eased into working regularly at first base following his MRI exam Thursday, Feb. 14. "There will be a gradual increase of baseball activity," manager John Farrell said. "Right now, obviously, there is no pounding, impact activity. C | Ramon Hernandez | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Colorado Rockies C Ramon Hernandez has lost 15 pounds in the offseason and now weighs 217, which is down from 232 pounds from last season. Hernandez will serve as the backup to C Wilin Rosario this season.

Outfielder

OF | Drew Stubbs | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy
Cleveland Indians OF Drew Stubbs worked with Cincinnati Reds assistant hitting coach Ronnie Ortegon this winter on eliminating his leg kick at the plate in favor of a smaller toe tap that he will use in his swing as a trigger mechanism. Stubbs is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Detroit Tigers OF Austin Jackson, who eliminated his leg kick and improved his batting average from .249 to .300 and drastically cut down his strikeouts.

OF | Brett Jackson | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs OF Brett Jackson's hands are now lower in his batting stance and his swing is more compact after working in the offseason with manager Dale Sveum and hitting coach James Rowson. "It has to do with using more of my top hand," Jackson said of the changes. "I'm a right-hand dominant athlete, and I have a tendency to try to overdo it a little bit with my bottom hand. If you watch swings from last year, you know my back elbow was getting really high and causing kind of like a teetering effect and making me slightly late on everything."

OF | Brent Lillibridge | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum loves the versatility that INF Brent Lillibridge brings to the club, and he has a chance to serve as the backup first baseman to 1B Anthony Rizzo. Cs Welington Castillo and Dioner Navarro will also work out at the position in spring training.

SP | Scott Feldman | Chicago Cubs | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs SPs Scott Baker, Scott Feldman, Carlos Villanueva and Travis Wood are all in competition for the final two rotation spots. "Gotta fight for the job," Wood said Tuesday, Feb. 12. "May the best man win." Feldman likely has the inside track for a spot, as he is a former 17-game winner for the Texas Rangers back in 2009.

SP | Justin Masterson | Cleveland Indians | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians Ps Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Brett Myers and Zach McAllister are all but locked for four of the first five rotation spots. Ps Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco (elbow), David Huff, Scott Kazmir, Corey Kluber (knee) and Daisuke Matsuzaka are among the candidates vying for the job.

SP | Trevor Cahill | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy,
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Trevor Cahill changed his diet during the offseason and lost 10 to 15 pounds. He says he feels better, and more athletic. Cahill likes that he has more energy, and he hopes that will help to improve his defense. "I was maybe in better shape when I was 16," Cahill said.

SP | Tyler Skaggs | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy,
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Tyler Skaggs was 6-foot-4, 180 pounds when he was drafted in 2009. He is now up to about 213 pounds, putting on the kind of weight to help him shoulder a heavy, starting pitcher's workload. "It's good to have a big pitcher's body," Skaggs said. "I think it's going to help me. I've just got to maintain it this year."

SP | Felix Hernandez | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy,
Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez's seven-year deal includes an eighth year at $1 million if he sustains a specific elbow injury, according to sources. He would need to miss around 120 to 130 days in one season or consecutive seasons to activate the clause.

SP | Tsuyoshi Wada | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy,
Baltimore Orioles SP Tsuyoshi Wada (elbow) is three to four weeks away from resuming bullpen sessions, and he could get into a spring training game before camp is over. He made 20 throws from 270 feet Wednesday, Feb. 13, and is regaining strength during his long toss program. Wada is attempting to return from Tommy John surgery.

SP | Jordan Zimmermann | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
The Washington Nationals and SP Jordan Zimmermann are not close to agreeing on a one-year deal to avoid salary arbitration. A date for arbitration has been set for Feb. 19.

SP | Gio Gonzalez | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
Washington Nationals pitching coach Steve McCatty would have preferred for SP Gio Gonzalez to skip the chance to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. "We're still juggling how we're going to do things, because we don't know the schedule they're trying to get him on, because their games are going to start pretty soon, too," McCatty added. "You try to get him in a spot where they see him fitting in their rotation. When we get done it'll probably look a little different than normal, because we're going to have to juggle some stuff around."

SP | Jeff Samardzija | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum was impressed with SP Jeff Samardzija's bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 13. "You would have thought it was playoff time," Sveum said. "That was probably as dominating of a bullpen that you're going to see. It was pretty impressive to watch him throw those 30 pitches or whatever he threw today."

SP | Chris Capuano | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy,
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chris Capuano said he isn't asking for a trade even though he and SP Aaron Harang are likely to be shifted to the bullpen this year. Harang said he hasn't thought about a trade, either, but he's preparing to be a starter this spring. SP Ted Lilly (shoulder) will be in competition with both Capuano and Harang in spring training.

SP | Brandon Beachy | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) is making progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery and could be cleared to throw off a mound by the end of next week. Beachy is optimistic about returning right around the one-year anniversary of his surgery, which was performed June 21 of last season.

SP | Roy Halladay | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said SP Roy Halladay will be on a slower plan than usual this spring, and they may hold him to just one inning and 25 pitches in his first spring start. "Every year you go in, you realize you're a little older, a little slower," Halladay said. "The game's getting quicker. The guys are getting younger." Halladay changed his offseason workouts this year to focus more on core strength and "sport-specific" training.

SP | Jenrry Mejia | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia's age and identity is being investigated as he attempts to obtain a visa in order to report to spring training. The team thinks the investigation is random, but they don't know how long it will take Mejia to report to camp. He'll likely open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, and his reporting delay could affect his competition for a bullpen job.

SP | Casey Kelly | San Diego Padres | Fantasy,
San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly said he watched video of his starts from last season over the winter, and he came away wanting to work on his pitch selection and his work out of the stretch. The team wants to see him improve his secondary pitches as he competes for a rotation spot this spring.

SP | Dustin McGowan | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy,
Updating a previous item, Toronto Blue Jays SP Dustin McGowan (shoulder) came up lame after working on flat ground Tuesday, Feb. 12, and the team will be cautious with him moving forward. "It's nothing major but with all he's been through and his history, we'll be cautious," added manager John Gibbons. "Right now we really don't need him the way we're set up, but as the season goes on, you never know."

SP | Tim Lincecum | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum looked good in his first bullpen session this spring Wednesday, Feb. 13. Last year, his biggest problem was his inability to keep the ball down because his upper body was "leaking" toward the plate too early. Lincecum felt much better Wednesday and was able to keep the ball down. "I felt my front leg was actually stabilizing my motion when it comes to an end and I'm actually following through as opposed to just falling out of it or wheeling off. My follow-through was a lot better and on target."

SP | Rich Harden | Minnesota Twins | Injury, Fantasy,
Minnesota Twins SP Rich Harden (shoulder) was encouraged by his first bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 13, but said he hasn't been told if he'll be a starter or reliever in camp. He's willing to pitch in either role this spring for a chance to make the roster.

SP | Tyler Chatwood | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy,

SP | Tim Stauffer | San Diego Padres | Injury, Fantasy,
San Diego Padres SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) threw for the first time off a mound Wednesday, Feb. 13, since last August. "We'll ease into it a little more than normal," Stauffer said. "At this point, it's tough to gauge. We will just have to see how it goes. But right now, everything is going along as planned." He can make $1 million if he's on the active roster this year and incentives could raise the deal to $1.25 million based on the number of games started. He can request his release if he's not on the roster by June 1.

SP | Clayton Richard | San Diego Padres | Fantasy,
San Diego Padres SP Clayton Richard has his salary arbitration date set for Feb. 19. However, he's hopeful he can reach a deal with the team before then. He's asking for $5.55 million and the Padres countered with $4.905 million.

SP | Andrew Cashner | San Diego Padres | Injury, Fantasy,
San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner (thumb) is on a "restricted program" in spring training, but there is a good chance he'll be throwing off a mound by March 1, according to manager Bud Black. Ps Jason Ray and Jerry Sullivan won't throw off a mound this week due to "tender arms."

SP | Clay Buchholz | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (hamstring) is in great shape despite tweaking his hamstring in a freak incident Tuesday, Feb. 12. He threw Wednesday, Feb. 13, and could throw off the base of a mound Thursday, Feb. 14. "It was a good day for Clay Buchholz," said manager John Farrell. "He's responded favorably to treatment. His range of motion is good. His strength is good. He still has some sensation in a smaller spot, more localized than (Tuesday). He actually went out and threw after the workout, not off the mound, but he was able to put a ball back in his hand. It was an encouraging day for him."

SP | John Lackey | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SP John Lackey (elbow) looked good while throwing Wednesday, Feb. 13. "A good work day today. Freeness in his delivery, freeness in his arm, staying behind the ball, repeating his delivery. All the things we're looking for right now, he did very well. He's in great condition, so a 35-pitch bullpen was not taxing for him," manager John Farrell said.

SP | Felix Doubront | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SP Felix Doubront (shoulder) threw from 75 feet Wednesday, Feb. 13, and will gradually increase his distance. He's expected to get on the mound next week.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (elbow) is hoping to be throwing off a mound in early March.

SP | Tim Hudson | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Tim Hudson wants to stick around and pitch for a few more years and end his career in Atlanta. "Hopefully, I'll play a while longer, and hopefully it's here," Hudson said. "I think when the day comes when I'm not a Brave or not playing for anybody, it's going to be a sad day around the Hudson house."

SP | Jon Garland | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy,
Seattle Mariners SPs Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman threw "free and easy" Wednesday, Feb. 13, and manager Eric Wedge will be patient with the two veterans. Beyond SPs Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Joe Saunders, the final two rotation spots are up for grabs.

SP | Danny Duffy | Kansas City Royals | Injury, Fantasy,
Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy (elbow) is feeling good enough after his first bullpen session Tuesday, Feb. 12, that he will move his next throwing session up to Thursday, Feb. 14, instead of Friday, Feb. 15.

SP | Johan Santana | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said it won't be up to SP Johan Santana as to whether he'll pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic this year. "It's a complicated situation, just because of his injury and the fact that he did not pitch at the end of last season," Alderson said. "As a result, he has to go through a physical and a review panel. But ultimately he needs our permission to play. And what we're going to do is take a look at it over the next few days."

SP | Andy Pettitte | New York Yankees | Fantasy,
New York Yankees SP Andy Pettitte said he feels great and thinks he can throw 200 innings and be a 20-game winner this season. He also said he won't know until the offseason whether he'll want to return for another season.

SP | Bruce Chen | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy,
Kansas City Royals SP Bruce Chen will not pitch for Team China in the World Baseball Classic.

SP | Johnny Cueto | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy,
Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker would prefer if SP Johnny Cueto didn't pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Cueto said he wants to play for his country. "We have spring training for a reason, where guys go two, four, five, five, seven (innings)," Baker said. "Most of them endurance-wise can't go more than seven innings (out of spring training). That's why the bullpens are so important early."

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona plans to call officials from the World Baseball Classic to see if it is all right for RPs Vinnie Pestano and Chris Perez to return from Team USA to pitch in an exhibition game during the tournament. Toronto Blue Jays RP Sergio Santos (shoulder) wasn't holding anything back in his bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 13, and popped the catcher's mitt several times with his fastball.

RP | Scott Atchison | New York Mets | Injury,
New York Mets RP Scott Atchison (elbow) is a favorite to earn one of the spots in the bullpen this spring. "I got back and I felt normal in the five outings I made in September," Atchison said. "I was able to throw multiple innings in a couple of those outings and different things to prove to myself that I was fine. I haven't had any problems getting going here. So I feel like I'm where I need to be, just like I would be any other spring, and I'll go about it normally."

RP | Matt Capps | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians SP Daisuke Matsuzaka must be released by March 26 or he'll receive a $100,000 bonus before going to the minor leagues, and the team faces the same situation with DH Jason Giambi and RP Matt Capps. RP | Mike Adams | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (shoulder) said he won't rush himself back after undergoing surgery to fix thoracic outlet syndrome last year, the same procedure that St. Louis Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder) was unable to come back from. He has been doing it for so long, I think he is pretty aware of what he has to do."
