First Baseman

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman could play for Team USA or Team Canada in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was born in the United States but both of his parents are originally from Canada.


SS | Jurickson Profar | Texas Rangers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Texas Rangers SS Jurickson Profar might end up at Triple-A Round Rock to start the season if he doesn't stick in the undesirable role of utility infielder. The depth chart for the team changed following the addition of 1B Lance Berkman. Berkman will serve as the team's designated hitter, keeping 1B Mitch Moreland at first base and 2B Ian Kinsler at second base rather than a position change.

SS | Mike Aviles | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy
Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti mentioned a mix of veterans and youngsters who could potentially factor into the team's plans at designated hitter. Antonetti said Rule 5 pick 1B Chris McGuiness could get a look as well as C Yan Gomes and INF Mike Aviles. OFs Ezequiel Carrera and Tim Fedroff are also seen as potential options. "We have a number of internal alternatives that we'll look to," Antonetti said.

Third Baseman

The St. Louis Cardinals plan to operate in 2013 with a $115 million payroll, fueled primarily by increases to P's Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs, Edward Mujica and Marc Rzepczynski and to 3B David Freese. All are arbitration-eligible.

Texas Rangers 3B Mike Olt was considered the leading candidate to serve as the team's designated hitter, but that has changed since the team added veteran 1B Lance Berkman. Olt is likely to start the season with Triple-A Round Rock.

Updating a previous report, a tentative date has been set for New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez's (hip) hip surgery but general manager Brian Cashman wouldn't reveal the date. Rodriguez has not suffered any setbacks as he prepares for the procedure.


C | Jose Molina | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy
Tampa Bay Rays C Jose Molina is expected to be the primary catcher in 2013, playing approximately two-thirds of the team's games. Cs Robinson Chirinos, Chris Gimenez and Jose Lobaton will battle for the backup catcher spot in spring training, barring another offseason move.

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is in line to platoon in center field with OF Craig Gentry, but that arrangement could be in jeopardy if the team considers pursuing free-agent OF Michael Bourn (Braves).

The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres reportedly discussed a potential trade that would have sent OFs Justin Upton and Jason Kubel to San Diego, in exchange for 3B Chase Headley. However, the Padres are no longer looking to trade Headley and Kubel would not have had a spot in the Padres' starting lineup because of the presence of OF Carlos Quentin.

OF | Giancarlo Stanton | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
The Miami Marlins have not had internal discussions about trading OF Giancarlo Stanton. The team's plans to have him start the year as their cleanup hitter have "not changed at all," according to a source with knowledge of the their intentions.

OF | Drew Stubbs | Cleveland Indians | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Cleveland Indians president Mark Shapiro said the team has approached OFs Drew Stubbs and Michael Brantley about playing center field but has not made a final decision on who will play the position. The winner could be determined during spring training.

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Jose Bautista (wrist) is not expected to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

During an appearance with children at the Shane Victorino Boys and Girls Club in Philadelphia Friday, Jan. 4, Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino said he wanted to return to the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason. "I wanted to come back," he said. "We kept in touch and I informed them of what was going on and the opportunities I was getting. We gave them every last shot to give me an opportunity to come back. This is the place I wanted to be. But unfortunately it didn't work out."

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to search for a veteran corner outfielder. Philadelphia has been going after free-agent OF Scott Hairston (Mets) and are pursuing a trade for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Vernon Wells. The Angels would need to eat most of Wells' remaining salary for the trade to be a fit. If no more outfielders are acquired, the team will enter spring training with OFs Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr., Darin Ruf and Laynce Nix on the corner spots.

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp (shoulder) is pain-free after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, and doctors cleared him to resume upper body workouts. "He's fired up, because he's finally able to lift weights and do upper-body work," said agent Dave Stewart. "Until January, he was really limited by the doctors. Do we know for sure he'll be ready (for Opening Day)? In my opinion, no. But he has done all of the rehab. They wanted him to be pain-free, and he is. Now is the real strength-building process, starting to swing and throw. It's step by step."

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (elbow) has had no setbacks in his rehab from a partially torn right elbow ligament this offseason. He hit 94 mph on a radar gun while throwing a two-inning simulated game in November. Billingsley took a month off and resumed throwing in December. "Physically, Chad's doing great, and he's excited about the year," said agent Dave Stewart. "He sounds confident. I'm not in his head, but he sounds like he's relieved that the throwing program worked out well. He's pain-free. He said he's right where he needs to be." The team is cautiously optimistic that he can avoid surgery, but the club won't know until he tests his elbow in spring training.
